07 Aura XR vs 07 Camry XLE by stevestr1

I am contemplating which car to lease for 24 months. I have no experience with Saturn cars. I owned an 00 and 04 Camry, LE 4 bangers both of which never had a single problem. I am driving about 20K miles year freeway/city outside sales between covering all S.Cal area. The company is paying for the lease. I see that GM/Saturn has special lease rates but nothing on the Camry. Here's a copy of 24mth lease offer on the Saturn site for the 07 XR:

2007 AURA XR - Lease

$286.00 per month 24 month lease
$1,995 due at lease signing for qualified leasees
No security deposit required.
Tax, title, license and retailer fees are extra.
For qualified lessees.

Lease payments based on specially equipped 2007 AURA XR with MSRP of $24,995, a capitalized cost of $23,131 and a residual value of $17,746. 24 monthly payments total $6,864.00. Option to purchase at the lease end for amount to be determined at lease signing. GMAC must approve lease. Take delivery by 09/04/2007. Mileage charge of $.20 per mile over 24,000 miles. Lessee pays for maintenance, repair and excess wear. Payments may be higher in some states. Residency restrictions apply. Not available with other offers.

I can buy miles 0.15 each in advance plus tax. MSRP is most likely going to be closer to 25,995 or so. Not sure what money factor is on this lease offer. Anyone know? I read lots of negative buyers ratings on the 07 Camry (IE engine stutter mainly and other issues) My only worry is the Aura has no cabin filtration and the Camry does. Driving in LA smog everyday is not all that healthy without the cabin filter.

Your comments/suggestions are appreciated!

Saturn a pretty good choice. by britcrlvr

Althought in the past american cars have not offered a recirculate button to eliminate pollutants from the outside, in the past five years these feature have become available and should be found in the Saturn. In the past quality of GM products has been mediocre, but some of the new products like the Saturn Aura have much improved quality. Contrastly Toyota has had some problems with quality control recently. Could you clarify your money question? As I recall the XR is the fully loaded Saturn Aura and you'll have more features than a comparably priced Camry. I think if you test drive this, drive it up a steep hill or something, to see if it has enough power, it should. I guess my question is if you aren't paying for the lease the price seem reasonable, but these cars have not been selling particularly well, partly becasue of overproduction. You could probably get away with offering at least 5K less than what the dealership is asking. I might go as low as 16 G, and see if we could reach middle ground around 19 or 20 G might save you more money for gas, or something else. Anyways, the Saturn is an enticing choice.

I do believe the "Max Air" position older airconditioned American cars had served the same as a recirculation button...

Like they said above, the air shouldn't be a problem- I wouldn't worry about it. And, even though Toyota has supposedly been a little edgy with recent quality, by no means is it as poor as that of GM, however much they've improved. Either way, the Camry is just a better quality car- it won the comparison test in Edmunds, was the Motortrend "Car of the Year," and is Consumer Reports recommended.

I find it hilarious seeing competitors trying desperately to steal sales from Toyota with comparison ads, while Toyota's not spending any money on advertising the Camry- after all, what will Toyota gain from saying they're better than the other?

Also, consider this- you said you haven't had a single problem with the Camry- how much better can you get than that? And the 07 is a huge improvement to the previous one. I don't think you have anything to gain by switching over to Saturn, so I'd go with the Camry. Thanks for reading my long post !

Just a thought... you don't HAVE to lease, you know- it's a poor deal if you think it through... Well anyway, just my two cents.

But on the other hand you may want to take note that it is the american manufacturers, GM especially, that are taking the lead in moving back to the more safe overall RWD.

It's about time...!!

The two modes, "Max air" vs "recirculate" are not functionally the same. You can have the system in recirculate at any level of heating/A/C operation. The "old" Max Air mode would not only close the system off to fresh incoming air but put the system into max cooling simultaneously.

My sister owned a 2007 camry and I must warn you that the quality of this car has suffered significantly from prior camrys. Yes, it was me, I told her to buy one at the begining of the year because of the reputation. After only 750 miles the transmission was found to be faulty so it was replaced under warenty. When she got the car back it didn't shift right and was extreamly sluggish leading her to fear even driving what was supposed to be a brand new car. It tuned out to be another bad transmission. After 1200 miles she got her old 2001 grand am back. Having talked to others I've heard there is a mufti-month waiting list for transmission replacemnets. Also check out user reviews on edmunds or yahoo autos. By the way, she still drives her grand am.

Here's a nice comparison by Autoweek --> http://www.autoweek.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20070126/FREE/70118010/1528/F- - - REE

If you look at the reviews for the Aura, they are very favorable and I have not heard of any reliability issues with this car to date. I'd pick the Aura over the Camry by a long shot.

Personally, everyone I know with Camrys are happy with them. The transmission glitch is corrected with a reflash. There is a reason why 450,000 of them are sold each year and yet, only 10% go to fleets.

But I guess in order to jumpstart lagging sales of the Aura...
