Comparison Test: 2008 Subaru Impreza WRX vs. 2007 Mazdaspeed 3 - Although the Subaru's 5.9-second 0-60 time is two ticks better than the Mazda's 6.1-second clocking, it's all due to its traction advantage at launch. By the end of the quarter-mile, the two cars are dead even at 14.5 seconds and the Mazdaspeed 3 is going 98.7 mph compared to the WRX at 94.4 mph. Considering the difference in power ratings, none of this is surprising. (more)

Ouch!

I have driven many a times a Lime Rock Park, I actually just attended Skip Barber Racing School for Mazda there. That turn is not that tough to negotiate. It just proves that the driver is the most important piece of equipment in a vehicle!

I'm thinking ill timed throttle lift

I will agree. I guess that driver did not know that in that turn, you need to accelerate because a slight up hill turn in on the horizon. Throttle lift did seem to throw him into an uncontrollable yaw angle.

I haven't made it to Lime Rock yet, but it looked to me as if he was also turning in too early on the turns leading up to the crash.

"The low volume, limited production WRX is the STi."

Right you are, and a very good point. In reality, this Edmunds article is comparing apples to oranges - the true comparison is the WRX STi versus the MazdaSpeed3.

As it has finally been released at the Tokyo motor show, read the stats and weep, Mazda fans.

2008 Subara WRX STi:
305 hp
290 lb-ft torque avail. at 2,400 rpm
0-60 in 4.8 seconds
and, AWD of course

2008 MazdaSpeed3
263 hp
280 lp-ft torque at 3000rpm
0-60 in 6.1 seconds (via this edmunds article)

Oh spare me the STI is not a competitor to the Speed3 just being a limited model doesn't qualify it. By that standard the Bugatti Veyron stomps the STI into the ground after all it's a limited model!
The Speed3 competes with the WRX face facts and it does so based on COST not limited availability. Also the speed3 costs LESS than the WRX! The STI costs a whopping $36K which is $10-12K more than a Speed3. Sure i'm cross shopping the 2 cars but it's obvious the 2 cars are in a different league price wise. If price doesn't matter then by all means you give me the money and i'll take the Veyron.

I believe my original point, handily taken out of context, was about the availability of an automatic tranny option. It was meant more to illustrate the models relative position in the manufacturers lineup. I love my Speed3. I really like the STi. I don't feel a direct performance comparison to a car that cost approx. 50% more than the purchase price of mine is valid. Mazda doesn't pretend to occupy the STi/Evo space. As a side note, I've seen published 0-60 times for the Speed3 in the low-mid 5 sec range. I don't feel they're extremely valid either. To get those kind of numbers would require more automotive abuse than I feel like handing my daily driver.

Yeah, right. The Scooby costs ten grand more...

Wow! A car that costs 50% more than the MS3 is about one second faster 0-60. Yawn.
Besides, aren't you the guy was whining about not being able to get a slushbox in an MS3? How do you explain the lack of one in the STi? Could it be that Subaru Technica wants to ensure that only serious drivers get behind the wheel of their halo car?
Sounds like they have taken a page out of the Mazdaspeed play book...

Excellent summary of the original point I was trying to make.

Well it's a no brainer to go with the STi, if you have an extra $10,000 hanging around. Spend around $3,500 for the GT3071 turbo, CAI, turbo back exhaust and you are running times similar to the STi.

Check this out. According to Motor Trend, they got a 5.4 0-60 out of the new EVO and 14.0 in the 1/4 mile 96.9mph. Edmunds got 5.9 0-60 and 14.2 100mph out of the Mazdaspeed3. The quickest MS3 0-60 I have seen is around 5.4 and 1/4 mile times around 13.7-14.0. All of this for $9,000 less. Ha! Zoom-zoom!!
