Comparison Test: 2008 Subaru Impreza WRX vs. 2007 Mazdaspeed 3 - Although the Subaru's 5.9-second 0-60 time is two ticks better than the Mazda's 6.1-second clocking, it's all due to its traction advantage at launch. By the end of the quarter-mile, the two cars are dead even at 14.5 seconds and the Mazdaspeed 3 is going 98.7 mph compared to the WRX at 94.4 mph. Considering the difference in power ratings, none of this is surprising. (more)

For example the newest GTI has an open diff but the traction control system applies the brakes to the wheel that is slipping

Isn't that called "traction control". The ABS system holds wheels that slip, and releases once traction is gained.

Sound of the flat four wins over the mazda.

Agreed. Nothing like the sound of a VW Beetle at full battle cry!

Ironic since the MS3 sounds more like a Beetle than a WRX. But hey, nothing like the sound of an exhaust note completely drowning out what little engine sound you have. Oh wait, the coffee-can muffler on every ghetto kid's little Civic comes to mind.

brakes suck on subarus.

Maybe because they are as heavy as Camrys?

Ahem...

MazdaSpeed3 curb weight; 3180 lb
2008 WRX 5-door; 3,142 lbs

All that weight, being dragged around by the 2 front wheels; sounds like a blast...

Can't say I've ever driven a catwalk, but I've had no problems driving my Mazdaspeed in heavy rain.

Can't say I have either, but simply driving a 2007 Mazdaspeed3 over some train tracks sure was interesting. Gotta love torque-steer! Oh wait, maybe I didn't have "skills". (I guess the driver in the picture of the smashed MS3 didn't either...)

True enough, which is why traction control and AWD is a good choice for drivers with less than stellar driving skills. That said, the most effective traction control system resides between the driver's ears.

LOL! I just spit water in my monitor. So, FWD must be for people with "skills", thats why most economy cars use FWD? Good to know, its all about "skills". I guess Colin McRae didn't have them...

I'll admit that it isn't as entertaining as my BMW or Speed Triple, but it IS fun nonetheless.

Well, now that you mention it...

(I guess the driver in the picture of the smashed MS3 didn't either...)

Try reading for comprehension next time; I explained that the MS3 crashed due to the fact he had used up his front pads. And while we are on the subject, just how much HPDE experience do YOU have?

So, FWD must be for people with "skills", thats why most economy cars use FWD?

Nope, it's true whether the car is RWD or FWD. AWD is the only choice if you don't want to learn about vehicle dynamics or proper technique. Even the most ham-fisted drivers can convince themselves that they are the next Schumacher.

Good to know, its all about "skills".

Precisely!

I guess Colin McRae didn't have them...

You missed the point once again. In the hands of a good driver, AWD can be a definite advantage. However, for most drivers, AWD is a band-aid that compensates for mediocre driving skills- such as the imbeciles who say "I need an AWD car because I have to drive in the rain."

Were ya' standing on the gas over the railroad tracks? I negotiate all sorts of bumps, humps and heaves without incident. Even when I've been less than attentive about driving, the DSC kicks in and prevents an embarrassed call to my insurance company. There are necessary habit adjustments to driving a high powered FWD platform. The MS3 is considerably better mannered than my once beloved 91 Eclipse GS-T.

Torque steer hasn't been a problem for me either- and the MS3 is the first FWD car I've ever purchased.

This is an incredible in-car video. I just can't believe my eyes; how could this happen to -of all things- an AWD Subaru???
And on dry pavement???

Always ready. It's what makes a Subaru, a Subaru.

I'm thinking ill timed throttle lift... My old 'Stang was a lesson in that evil.

Ouch!

I have driven many a times a Lime Rock Park, I actually just attended Skip Barber Racing School for Mazda there. That turn is not that tough to negotiate. It just proves that the driver is the most important piece of equipment in a vehicle!

I will agree. I guess that driver did not know that in that turn, you need to accelerate because a slight up hill turn in on the horizon. Throttle lift did seem to throw him into an uncontrollable yaw angle.

I haven't made it to Lime Rock yet, but it looked to me as if he was also turning in too early on the turns leading up to the crash.
