Comparison Test: 2008 Subaru Impreza WRX vs. 2007 Mazdaspeed 3 - Although the Subaru's 5.9-second 0-60 time is two ticks better than the Mazda's 6.1-second clocking, it's all due to its traction advantage at launch. By the end of the quarter-mile, the two cars are dead even at 14.5 seconds and the Mazdaspeed 3 is going 98.7 mph compared to the WRX at 94.4 mph. Considering the difference in power ratings, none of this is surprising. (more)

impreza feels solid and ia as heavy as a camry. Mazda is super light and flimsy and does not do well on crash tests. Driving in heavy rain in an impreza is a catwalk. Lossing control in a 4wd traction controlled vehicle is very difficult to do as compared to 2wd car. Sound of the flat four wins over the mazda. brakes suck on subarus.

Replying to: henry14 (Nov 08, 2007 8:39 pm) That's supposed to be an advantage? Mazda is super light and flimsy and does not do well on crash tests. Oh really? I guess you haven't seen this: The driver hit a tire wall at an HPDE at 100-110 mph(the cause of the crash was due to the driver's failure to keep tabs on pad wear between sessions). No serious injuries. Here's the video-shot from an Rx-7 two cars back. Driving in heavy rain in an impreza is a catwalk. Can't say I've ever driven a catwalk, but I've had no problems driving my Mazdaspeed in heavy rain. Lossing(sic) control in a 4wd traction controlled vehicle is very difficult to do as compared to 2wd car. True enough, which is why traction control and AWD is a good choice for drivers with less than stellar driving skills. That said, the most effective traction control system resides between the driver's ears. Sound of the flat four wins over the mazda. Agreed. Nothing like the sound of a VW Beetle at full battle cry! brakes suck on subarus. Maybe because they are as heavy as Camrys? |

Replying to: henry14 (Nov 08, 2007 8:39 pm) I have a Impreza, and yes, it feels heavy, but the Mazda3 is not flimsy, and was only tested WITHOUT side air bags back in 2004. The MS3 has all air bags std. Lossing control in a 4wd traction controlled vehicle is very difficult to do as compared to 2wd car Will agree with you on that |

For example the newest GTI has an open diff but the traction control system applies the brakes to the wheel that is slipping. The automatic awd subaru system does a similar deed, but hey your driving an automatic, we know where your priorities are. The speed3 has a true limited slip diff as is should. Still, I'd rather be in a mazdaspeed miata if I could afford a weekend car too.
