Comparison Test: 2008 Subaru Impreza WRX vs. 2007 Mazdaspeed 3 - Although the Subaru's 5.9-second 0-60 time is two ticks better than the Mazda's 6.1-second clocking, it's all due to its traction advantage at launch. By the end of the quarter-mile, the two cars are dead even at 14.5 seconds and the Mazdaspeed 3 is going 98.7 mph compared to the WRX at 94.4 mph. Considering the difference in power ratings, none of this is surprising. (more)

Remember, the components built on a platform can differ, as you stated as the differences between the Impreza and Legacy. The Mazda6 platform is shared with the CX-9, and they use totally different suspension components as well. I'm guessing there is probably more in common with the Mazda3/Focus/S40 than you think. Yes, there are similarities, but, to say they are the same is simply not true. The Focus uses Mazda's 2.0L engine, tuned a bit different. They have similar suspension setups, although tuned differently. The interiors and exteriors are completely different. Build quality is also very different. Look at the exterior, and you can see larger, un uniform gaps in the body panels on the Focus, that just don't exist on the 3. The 3 has a larger wheel base, and a larger interior. Transmissions are also different. Mazda uses their own.

In reality, the Mazda3/Mazdaspeed3 share a similar platform to the Focus/S40, just like the Impreza and Legacy have a similar platform. Yes?

Replying to: aviboy97 (Dec 27, 2007 1:31 pm) The Focus/Mazda3/S40 all start with the "same" building block. The Impreza and Legacy don't start with the "same" building block. We could say that the Mazda3/Focus/S40 "share" a platform. I don't think it would be correct to say the Impreza and Legacy "share" a platform. Does this work?
