Comparison Test: 2008 Subaru Impreza WRX vs. 2007 Mazdaspeed 3 - Although the Subaru's 5.9-second 0-60 time is two ticks better than the Mazda's 6.1-second clocking, it's all due to its traction advantage at launch. By the end of the quarter-mile, the two cars are dead even at 14.5 seconds and the Mazdaspeed 3 is going 98.7 mph compared to the WRX at 94.4 mph. Considering the difference in power ratings, none of this is surprising. (more)

I thought they did, but, Haldex has nothing to do with it at all.

It's still a reactive system. I prefer a proactive system like what Subaru uses.

My wives Impreza has taken numerous trips to the dealer this year..head gaskets, O2 sensor twice, hold in intake manifold, replaced fuel lines (interior would reek of fuel). Right now, the ODO reads just over 70K. Luckily, we have an extended warranty, have not paid for anything.

Wow thats' terrible. I expect mine to have problems as it's 6 years old with over 200K on it.
It's had a few problems but mostly small stuff. Subaru builds some great cars, but I guess a few slip through the cracks.

Overall, we have been happy with the car. It's a 2002 Impreza 2.5RS. Great in the snow. Fuel economy stinks, getting low very low 20's as an average, 25 highway TOPS!! I was told by my service manager that the head gasket and fuel line issues have been common in the Imprezas as well as the Foresters.

Doesn't mean a thing to me. If and when Mazda offers AWD on the MS3, then maybe I'll look at one.

I didn't think I'd like it either, but a test drive changed my mind. I actually prefer RWD; I bought the MS3 on a whim while I waited to see if Munich would make a truly sporting version of the 135i(looks like I'll wait in vain...). I find most AWD cars competent but extremely uninvolving to drive- especially on the track. The only AWD cars that I could see myself owning(not counting my wife's BMW truck) are the RS4, STi, and Evo. In the meantime, I'll take the MS3 to a few HPDEs and see how its "pit bull on crystal meth" character translates to the track environment...

I have a 2002 WRX and it's been great, a few issues here and there but I drive so much that these thing are just expected, plus the company will rent me a car when mine is in the shop. I've had a few issues and fuel economy is not really very good I think I get about 24mpg on the highway which I mostly drive. I get less now probably but I stopped measuring it after the first year. too depressing but I'm reimbursed 35 cents a mile so in 200K that amounts to $70,000! since 2002! But not all of that is on the company so I really haven't worried about repairs. The new STI is a possibility but my kids are in college and that costs $$$$$.
Awesome in snow with Nokian tires but I have quotes out on a Mazdaspeed3. No AWD but good performance and I might get a job that requires less driving as it's really killing me to drive that much.
Subaru makes great cars but better fuel economy would be a big selling point for me.

Man, you weren't kidding when you said you drive more miles than most! I thought I drove a lot with over 126K in 5.5 years on my '02 WRX wagon.

It's actually more than that
I'm not counting times the Rex was in the shop and I had a rental or the times lately I've driven my wifes car.
The company will not provide a company car for me. I think they get a better deduction by paying my mileage? Well either way I'm worn out from doing it.
My license takes a risk every time I'm out on the highways.
Thankfully nothing has broken lately or I might have missed my vacation. My boss can't even reach me
My Rex is pretty rough right now, last legs really. I have a suc... I mean a buyer for it! He basically wants it for a street or race project or something like that so he's going to tear it all down anyway and it's a cool $1.5K for me. He knows the car well he works at a company I have to go to. His dad owns a customizing shop or something. No idea why he wants an old Rex he says it's a really cool car looks wise either way it's still $1,500 to me. I even have a $500 non-refundable deposit.

Interesting point Deskman makes. I wonder if the block in the MS3 2.3L can be traced back to the 2.3 ford block in the 80's Thunderbird Turbo coupe/ Mustang SVO?
