Article comments for First Drive: 2008 Honda Civic Mugen Si Sedan - We will not make Honda's case for it, since a base Si sedan with much of the essential goodness of this Mugen is almost $8,000 less expensive than the Mugen. That's an extra $160 per month, every month for five years, assuming a car loan with a 7.5 percent interest rate. (more)

No way is this worth it. Totally cosmetic, and quite useless. Si FTW! |

| too ricey and it's only offered in the sedan. yetch. | |

You have got to be kidding! A $30,000 ricer Honda? And still slow? I bought a 04 Dodge SRT 4 and saved $10,000 for upgrades. I can't wait to put some moron out of his misery in a stoplight drag.

dvsutton - Somehow, I don't think someone buying an Si is doing it so they can win a stoplight dragrace. It's certainly not the reason i got mine. That said, the car does appear to be a rip-off. If they're going to charge that much more for the car, they'd better do something more to enhance the performance. |

It's all a matter of personal preference... Honda will be able to sell every one of these cars to people that are JDM-obsessed and want to be able to say they got their Mugen direct from the factory. More power to them. Warranty won't hurt either. Personally, it's too "ricey" for me as well, but so is the SRT-4 so whatever. I'd rather be riding around in this thing than a Dodge anyway. |

the funny thing about the reason why the mugen civic costs so much has less to do with being jdm than the actual price of the parts. Here is a little fyi, but not that i agree with the concept. Totally. Mugen is to honda like nismo or sti is nissan and subaru respecitvely. The only problem is that while the parts themselves are of the highest quality, even the most loyal JDM guy will tell you that most of the time, its not worth the price, regardless of the factory perfect fit and finish that these parts provide for other hondas. Don't get me wrong: the mugen si looks GREAT. it reminds me of a shark. and the wheels on it are fantastic. Ricer? no more so than the evo or sti with the huge wing. AND its functional. BUT... despite its strong points (which are few) i would not buy this car. If maybe it was a couple grand more than the base si sedan, ok then maybe. But it simply is not worth the money. especially if you are going on a rant about factory warranty-backed parts and you want to spiff up your si from a performance standpoint anyway, and thus voiding the warranty all together. in 10 years, this car will be legendary among hondaphiles, and considering how much everything will cost in 10 years, i bet 30k will seem like a bargain for such a limited edition. at least until you look at what someone could get for 30k now (mazdaspeed 6, evo, r32, sti). At least the resale value will be phenomenal. Again, i liked the way this car looked, from the outside. But a little 200 dollar shift knob? why not some purple blue backlighting? a different fabric for the seats? more aggresive front seats mabye with a sort of 2 tone leather interior? HOw about a re-worked k20 putting some more hp to the ground? you know, to back up the reason why mugen was invented in the first place? To such even more potential out of hondas sport cars? this concept had so much potential. in order to get me (a devoted honda fan) to fork out this kind of dough, this is what this honda needed: 1. the k20a from the japanese type r (222hp) along with a revised suspension not just limited to slightly stiffer springs and shocks. 2. sligthly larger brakes 3. a unique and totally mugen-d interior. this approach would have at least let honda do their own thing. the other approach would have been to do what everyone else is doing with their hopped up compacts and adding sh-awd and slapping the k23 turbo in it. Probably would only manage a 6 second 0-60 time, but it would be one fun ride. heck even fwd mildly turboed k20 would have been fine, but i would expect that in the regular si and not have honda save it for a limited edition. so close to the mark honda, and yet so far off. again, coming from a honda guy. |
