#1 of 5 Rear Suspension Problem by rcmpl

Jul 31, 2007 (6:17 pm)

Just bought a new Cobalt. It has 500 miles, and I have a clunking sound eminating mostly from the right rear when going over speedbumps or when turning into my subdivision and hitting the small indenture. A definate slight clunking (metal to metal). Anybody have any experence with this type of problem? Thoughts would be helpful. The veh has been at the dealers for two days and I'm afraid they're going to tell me NTF or it's not a safety issue (so live with it man).

It could be a lot of things-exhaust, shock, hard to say.

I had this problem with a 1998 Hyundai Tiburon. It turned out that the rear disc brakes were missing a retention spring that holds the brake pad away from the disc. So when I hit a bump in the road the brake pad would slam into the disc and make a surprisingly loud *clank!* sound. Don't know if that applies to the Colbalt but its worth checking into and it's fairly cheap to fix.
