Leaking Front Crankshaft Gasket - Oil Caused? by 90mercsable

2002 RDV with only 11K miles, Yes!

My local mechanic says my front crankshaft gasket is leaking - it doesn't leak to the floor but whole area underneath is wet - he says it's leaking onto motor mount and will soften it up if not corrected.

Fine with me, I smell oil burning on hot parts..but he claims this was caused because I INSIST on using 5w-30 oil..I bring my own...he only uses 10w-30 in all cars. He says 10w-30 lubricates parts better and 5w-30 is just so they can "claim better mileage".

I say, I should stick to manufacturer recommendations and his claim that 5w-30 oil caused this is pure "nonsense".

Anyone else have an idea?...I know only from what I read..I am not a mechanic.

Personally, I would go with the manufacturer's recommendations. In any case, you'll probably want to replace that gasket ASAP.
