Yes, on my 2009 sonata the dealer told me since I just had an older car I will just have to get used to the way a newer car shifts!?! What the heck!!
And this is after I had the transmission already changed before the 3,000 mile mark. I have been there so many times I know the guys in the service area by heart. My problem is that they tell me that they cannot do anything for me unless a service tech feels the problem. I tell them that it happens at random I cannot make it happen. So they tell me to bring it in the moment it happens. Like I have that much time to stop everthing and ride to the dealership. Hyundai has not been much help either. By the way my father who owns a Tuson has noticed problems with his transmission also. Ugh, my first brand new car ever and this is the trouble I have!!!!

I also have a 2011 Hyundai Sonata with about 23,000 miles. I'm experiencing the same thing. When shifting the car in reverse I have noticed that the gear lights do not illuminate always and my door locks do not auto lock as usual. The vehicle seem to be very sluggish when excelerating and the transmission almost sounds like something is rubbing, Something is definely going on. I contacted the dealer and expalined what I have noticed and was told that their is a recall on the transmission. I have an appointment schedued for Tue.

I have a 2011 Hyundai Sonata. I bought it in Feb 2010. I have 33,000 miles on it. This is my first Sonata and I have many problems already. It's quite disappointing. I already had the whole muffler replaced because it was making metal rattling noise when I gave gas. The car was also pulling to the left so I had the alignment adjusted. Some part of the steering wheel had sticky rubber skin on it so I had the whole steering wheel replaced as well. Now the biggest problem is that whenever I press the gas pedal, the car bumps and jerks. The bumping is big enough to frustrate me. It's impossible to comfortably crusie at a constant speed, i.e. 45MPH because of bumping and jerking. When I slow down to a complete stop, the RPM goes up a little bit with rough downward shifts. I took the car to a Hyundai service department. They felt the bumping but they said every car was mechanically unique and the car was functioning normally because they didn't detect any computer error codes. I emailed the Hyundai Consumer's Affairs. They have the same excuse. I am very disappointed by the performance and the way the dealership and the company handled the matter. Does anyone have the same or similar problem? Am I the only one? I am seriously considering a trade-in and not coming back to Hyundai again.

Hello,

Today on the freeway my wife's 2006 (early model) Kia Optima had a vibration, fluctuating RPM and then it stalled. When it stalled we saw al lights on the instrument panel light up. No check engine light stayed after staring it again. We drove for a few minutes and it died again.

I opened the hood on the safety lane and checked the battery poles and belts.I could not see anything out of the ordinary. But my wife said a day before a bird flew in front of the car's grille and she found the bird's skeleton at the driveway that evening.

We drove the car home without problem. 15 minutes or so. No check engine light.

 What could be the problem?

I am using Mobil 1 Extended Performance oil for almost 8,000 miles now. With synthetic oil my usual oil change interval is 7-8,000 miles usually.

I have a 2009 Sonata. Starting making a tapping noise about 3 weeks ago. I was on my way to the dealership when the oil and check engine light came on. The engine had to be replaced. I have about 37,162 miles on the car.

#260 of 339 My Hyundai Horror Story by ramipls2004

I bought a 2011 Hyundai Hybrid in May 2011. It also jerked from a stop and had hesitation problems that my wife and I considered a safety issue for us. The transmission and motor hesitated from a stop when we went to go unto the traffic. I took it to the dealer and they could not find anything wrong except to agree that it was doing what I complained about. I also had the Regional Maintenance supervisor drive from Houston to San Antonio and he also noted that the Hybrid was doing the jerking and shuddering. I was told that it was normal for the Hybrid. We were not satisfied and I traded the Hybrid in after only 575 miles on it. I traded it back to another Hyundai dealer and promptly lost over 4K on the trade-in for another new 2011 Hyundai 2OT Sonata. Same thing!!! Not only that, this 2OT only gets 16 MPG. The sticker tells me that it should get 22/35. What a joke as we only get 16 at normal city driving; no goosing or high speeds. Hyundai SUCKS!! I will never buy another Hyundai of any type. I have a bad taste . Tell me if any others have the same problems.:(ramipls2004yahoo.com) . Poorly made cheap cars; all show; Never again!!!! Dealers also lie and do not tell you all the things that are going on. Do your research before you buy. I did not do this with Hyundai; only believed the TV ads. What a crock!!!!!

I live in Canada, and I can see it on the road, the Sonata is selling better than most midsize cars, You would think that if they had these problems that most people would stop driving them, on the contrary they are selling like hotcakes.
I have not test driven one yet, but I did test drive the mechanically equivalent KIA Optima, and it drives very nicely.
It could be first year production problems, but it does not bode well for American Manufacturing in the southern US states if that is the case. My Detroit built 2009 Mazda6 has been bullet proof for 3 years and 50K miles now with my only complaint of tire noise. Zero warranty repairs so far. I bought that car in the first months of production too, so I was expecting some problems.

I've had 3 episodes as follows: Start with large clunk in reverse, then transmission does not fully downshift, appears to slip going forward - no acceleration - very slow, relative high engine RPM, then abrupt down shift, spinning drive wheels, lurching forward, rapidly accelerating - requires quick slam on the brakes
