Nope, I've just owned nine of them, won a couple of Auto-X and TSD trophies, driven one in the Alcan Winter Rally, and covered a few US and International press intros.

Good point! I'm sure that a 2009 328i would lose out in any comparison test that included a 2009 Aura or Malibu.

Nice theory, except for the fact that C/D doesn't buy any of their long term test cars- they are provided by the manufacturer.

I am sure they choose which one they prefer, I believe in the A4 family they pick the 2l because to them thats the better car to have.

Remember, bankers on both sides of the pond used to write that home values will always go up so it was ok to always refinance, look where we ended up. At least those bankers followed through with trading the Mortgage Backed Securities.

If you missed the point, then you missed it, no need to repeat it here.

Mr Roadburner, thanks for noticing the spelling mistakes, but some of us half your age are at work nad have not time to spell check as we type. But go ahead and correct them, its a true service to community.

Actually, the 328i will win all comparisons, no matter what and this is because of what I said, its representing a series which has a true jewel. An engine which has been on the Wards top ten list for years, and has won several awards to date. That engine is found in the 335i.

Now lets get back to comparing the Aura with the 328i. Here is my honest opinion:

-Looks, subjective no one wins here.
-Interior room, Aura
-Handling, Of course 328i, no doubt about that, everyone knows this
-Reliability, same, there are both rated average by JD Powers
-Perfomance (0-60/1/4 mile/roadholding/slalom) same none of the two cars really surpasses the other by much here to be able to say one is better.
-Residual value not sure, both cars seem to be giving me about 45-55% residual using a base 07 model after 51,000 miles using KBB.
-Equipment, well here I use a 328i worth 37k (base model plus sport package only) and a fully loaded Aura worth 27k, $10,000 less and the Aura is far ahead. In fact a fully loaded Hyundai Elantra is ahead as well, LOL.
Maintenance costs, I guess you cannot argue with free maintenance.

I think based on this, both cars are similar but since the Aura is not even trying to be a luxury car or a perfomance sedan, but is at par with a car that is shooting to be like its big brother, the Aura wins, just for the simple fact that it is not even trying.

What Cars They Test [sjaieve] by thegraduate

Typically, the lead-foots at car magazines try to get the best-performing version of a car available, even if it is not the best-selling one. This is why most of them will typically have whatever "sport package" might be available, the biggest engine, and a manual transmission if possible, since they'll perform the best. Once in awhile they'll do a comparison based on price (such as the tests listed earlier), or when they chose an Aura XE to compare against other mid-level competitors back in 2007 (the Aura XE placed 4th out of 6, despite having the advantage being the only competitor with a V6).

Typically though, you see them comparing 335i with C350, IS350, etc just as you normally see Aura XR/Malibu LTZ V6 compared with Accord EX-L V6 and Camry SE V6. They take the best models available.

Really? What makes cars "try?"

In 2007 the 3.0L turbo engine found in the 335 replaced another BMW engine that had been on the list for years... the 3.0L non-turbo engine that is found in the 328.
