Saturn Aura XR vs. BMW 328i

I can get an Aura with a GM employee discount (in-law)which would probably save $700 plus another $1,500 with the rebate.
How much better is a BMW? Is it worth the price premium of $12K after the discount? Does it handle and have safety features worth that much? I tend to keep my cars at least six years so a long-lasting, great driving experience is what I am after. I used BMW is also an option.

Drive the 328i and see for yourself. When you hit the first turn at speed, you will know.

When you calculate the price difference, you should look at the expense for the six years' ownership (your time frame). So you should include the expense of maintenance (none for BMW for the first 4 years) and the depreciation factor of both cars after 6 years (BMW 3 series has one of the lowest depreciation rate). Then the handling comes with the vehicle. In my view, based of the above, the difference of ownership of the BMW will come down significantly in comparison. Of course the Saturn can't never touch the handling of the BMW. Drive it and you'll be convinced. BTW, does Saturn have 1 four year warranty? I'm not sure. That will add another factor to the comparison.

You gotta drive both cars and drive them hard. See what you like, what you don't like. Factor in maintenance, reliability, payments, depreciation as others have said. Good luck.

Just traded my 2007 Aura XR in on a 2005 330Ci 3 weeks ago and I will never look back! Do yourself a favor and don't make the same mistake that I did - drive both cars first! I bought the Aura w/o driving a BMW - HUGE mistake. I wanted to look at used BMWs, but my husband kept telling me that he wanted me to have something "new" - boy does he regret that one! There really is no comparison between the two once you drive them. I could go on and on, but I won't. Good luck!

So You wanted a smaller car with a smaller engine and less power in a shorter, narrower cabin without a 100,000 mile warrantee? A car that gets fewer MPG, without Stability and traction control in a package that new cost at least $10,000 more?
I hope it was a pretty color.
Sounds like a wise decision to me because it will be worth more as a trade in in 5 years than the Aura.
Enjoy it.

Oh puleeze, you've got to be kidding. If nothing else the BMW will be worth so much more than the Aura in a couple of years, it should actually work out to cost less per mile than the Saturn. Then there is the whole driving experience, the BMW's got it, the Aura don't. Who needs a 100,000 mile warranty when the car will bore you to death long before that.
Best Regards,
Shipo

Learn to read. I said the BMW WILL BE worth a lot more than the Aura in 5 years. It started out costing a lot more and BMW's have one of the best resale values in the market. I said it was a WISE decision on your part.
Don't try to counter logic with emotions, it doesn't work.
Enjoy your Beemer, especially at the gas pump as you put in the "PREMIUM 92+ OCTANE" gasoline at a 20 cent per gallon PREMIUM price.

Not sure about the depth of perspective you bring to this discussion, but you obviously are unaware of the "logic" Shipo brings to this forum and any other BMW-related topics based on his years of contribution to Edmunds. The condescending "learn to read" was not well chosen on your part.
He undoubtedly was able to digest your comments, as could those of us with an IQ to the left of the decimal. It would be a far less interesting market if logic were the only factor available to consumers to guide their automotive choices.
BTW... it's "Bimmer" for the cars. "Beemer" refers to the BMW motorcycles.

...let's stick to talking about the vehicles and not each other. Misunderstandings happen all the time in message boards. Let's leave it at that and move on.
