As an accountant, I can sympathize. You won't "make" money from the Hybrid purchase nor save money from it either. You are paying for a premium vehicle. To save money get a Yaris or the like.
Over the last decade or so, Toyota has refined the Hybrid to what we have in the 2007; even more so with the 2008. It is an extremely reliable vehicle (Compare maintenance issues amongst the forums of the different vehicles). My service costs the same as everyone else except that I'll most likely change my brakes once for every three changes of theirs. Most of the complaints have to do with expectations rather than service issues.
The hybrid is a very simple concept executed particularly well by Toyota. They combined a regular car (tune ups, inspections etc) with components from a toy remote control car (in large scale)via a well designed transmission and a computer. Get some dolt to fry the computer and you will have an expensive repair. Otherwise it's business as usual.
Don't expect it to be a great 4x4, spacious Minivan or a Prius. What you will get is a quiet, powerful, refined vehicle that is about as green as a V6 SUV can be.

My own take on the question is that having a hybrid isn't so much about saving money, but more about doing good for the environment and for the economy by using less oil than you would with another car - that would be the main benefit. You'll never save money by buying a hybrid vehicle, especially a larger one like the Highlander - your husband is right about that, but in my opinion it would be worth it because of the less tangible benefits that don't have dollar signs connected to them.

Thanks to all for their insight! I bought a 2007 Highlander Hybrid about 2 weeks ago and couldn't be happier with it! So far gas mileage has been great. Drove from Williamsburg, VA to the suburbs outside Philadelphia on one tank of gas. We'll see how well it does with local travel now. Glad I went with the Hybrid - every time I see some huge SUV or massive truck belching out all that Carbon I at least know I'm doing my part to save Mother Earth!

can someone provide me with the answer as to why hybrids are permitted into HOV lines. Toyota hybrids have one small issue, they don't save much gas on highway. You will save in traffic. Also all hybrids lost about 12-20 % in FE due to new federal FE testings, while most regular vehicles only lost 5-7%

Hybrids are allowed in the HOV lane as a political means to promote Hybrids.
Not all Hybrids are allowed in the HOV lane. For example, here in NY, there is a 45mpg minimum. The Toyota Prius and the Honda Civic Hybrid meet or exceed this requirement. There are no gas only cars that meet this requirement.
All hybrids get better fuel economy than the equivalent gas only cars on the Highway.
Yes, the EPA numbers have changed. Hybrids still get better mpg than the gas only versions.
