Hybrid trucks/SUVs have not exactly flown off the lots.   With diesel I know I will pay 12%+/- or so more for fuel, but also will get 30-40% better mileage. GM's new light duty 4.5L diesel is supposed to be getting fairly close to 30mpg in a 4x2 regular cab config. Even if that is high, I bet a Ridgeline diesel could match that. Add in how tuneable diesels are (gain both power and mileage easily), good resale, and with arguably less complexity, and I know where I want to spend my dosh.   That said, in primarily city driving hybrids tend to fair better. But in any app that is truck-like or features highway miles, then diesel wins. Replying to: fenris2 (Jul 02, 2008 1:02 pm) Recently I checked the gasoline mileage on my 2006 Honda Pilot and on a 100 mile trip (80/20 hwy/city) I averaged 31.5 mpg. The Pilot is 2wd with the variable cylinder management system. Why has Honda not used this system in the Ridgeline? It is supposed to yield a 15% increase in mpg. Just curious. Replying to: huff2 (Aug 05, 2008 9:02 am) 16 city 22 highway is the EPA MPG rating for 2006 Honda Pilot 2WD.   The mpg you posted of 31.5 mpg is 43% higher than EPA mpg.   Disbelief is my reaction to claims of 43% increases in mpg.

Replying to: huff2 (Aug 05, 2008 9:02 am) Gotta call BS on this.......I have a 2006 Pilot, 2wd and the best I ever got with it is 24mpg...going 65mph, flat ground and keeping the ECO kicked in at all times when possible. Regarding the pervasive disbelief at my Pilot's MPG, I'll leave the math to you. 114 miles on 3.67 gallons double clicked on the fill and refill. The purpose in my comments was not to elicit belief in mileage figures, but rather to find out if anyone knew if Honda was considering putting the variable cylinder management system in the Honda Ridgeline.
