How about putting batteries in the existing tool box area of the Ridgeline in exchange for 28-29 mpg?
 
that would be a great trade off imo
 
If Chevy can make a hybrid out of the Suburban, then surely Honda can pull it off on the Ridgeline

And I guess that I am STILL missing your point. Honda is going to make a major change in the drivetrain by adding a diesel engine option. So why do you think they won't engineer the rest of the drivetrain to work properly with the optional diesel engine?

it won't save you anything at the pump in cost per gallon that's for sure.
 
diesel has been over $4..00 per gallon in CA for quite a while

Unfortunately, I have to agree with you that the economics don't look good for diesel. The Tier 2 Bin 5 regulations are such that a diesel engine costs $2000 - $4000 more than a gas engine of similar power. While it will get about 30% better mileage, diesel fuel in my area costs about $1 more per gallon than gas, thus negating the mileage advantage.

Less fuel use.
 
Much better drivability with low RPM power (torque).
 
Increased longevity/durability.
 
Increased driving range and fewer fill ups required.
 
At 25% greater efficiency the diesel does save money when comparing $3.50 gas to $4.00 diesel, however, it is not just about saving money, it is about having a choice of what some believe is a superior engine and having choices.

I do understand the part about diesel engines getting better mpg. Are you saying they have better performance than the current gas engine in the Ridgeline?

In general. a diesel will feel better off the line because it has more torque available at a much lower rpm... you don't have to wind out to some wild redline above 5000 to "feel" the power. In the rpm range that most of your driving is done at, the diesel will be notably stronger.
 
As an example (although not apples to apples with the Ridgeline), my 2005 Ram 3500 offered 2 engines: a 330 hp 5.7L Hemi V8, and a 325 hp 5.9L Cummins turbodiesel straight six. A 5 hp difference shouldn't mean much, right? The Hemi's hp peak is at 4800 rpm; the Cummins at 2900. Now let's check the torque... the Hemi is 375 lb-ft 4200 rpm, the Cummins is 610 lb-ft 1500 rpm. Guess which truck comes off the line faster.

Is a hybrid "Ridgeline" modelled after the early ninties Ford Ranger PU..., size, weight, etc.

It is well known that Honda has a 6-cylinder diesel in the works. It's slated for the Pilot, Odyssey, Ridgeline and probably some Acura models as well. I expect to see it in 2010 or 2011.
