What is this discussion about? Ford Taurus, Sedan

Article comments for First Drive: 2008 Ford Taurus - For better or worse, Ford has realized that four out of five car buyers have heard of the Taurus, which sold almost 7 million units in the nameplate's 21 years on the market, and the same couldn't be said of the slow-selling Five Hundred. You can't buy the kind of brand awareness the Taurus has. Well, actually you could, but Ford estimates it would cost a half billion dollars. (more)

I just bought a 2008 Taurus SEL yesterday. It's too soon to be objective, but I love it. I had read up on the 2008 Taurus/Five Hundred, but I hadn't realized that they had only just started shipping them.

At the largest Ford dealership in Southern California, Galpin Ford, they only had 4 models in stock. I ended up buying one of them and according to Edmond's pricing guidelines, I paid $600 below TMV.

I hope the honeymoon lasts. My previous car was also a Taurus, a 1995 model. It was forcefully retired last week at almost 206k miles -- still on the original engine and transmission. My water pump went out on the Freeway, and before I could get over to the side of the road, my engine had seized. If I can get anywhere near that on the 2008, I'll be happy.

Nice car with everything you need, but there was something wrong with it, when I seen it, I didn't get excited to be around it, or have enthusiasm for owning it, or be seen in it, so in my book it sucks. I guess the fivehundred ruined it for me, I think they need to start all over with a fresh vehicle, I'll say it again it sucks to be around.
Now the new escape really caught my attention, and pulled me away from the taurus', ford done a good job with that, now I'm thinking of owning one of those instead.

Got a radio question. I noticed the upgrade radios on this model talk about MP3 access but they don't say anything about it on the base radio other then it has an auxiliary radio input. Will an Ipod work with the Auxiliary input?

#35 of 44 Cost cutting measures by mschmal

The think that has distrubed me most about the new Taurus is some of the cost cutting measures employed in the build.

2 that are glaring:

First the chrome bezel that surrounds the shifter mount has not screwed down by anything other than gravity and some friction. You can push your fingers under and pull it right off. The bottom of the bezel has strips of felt glued to it so its clear that the piece is ment to be easy to remove. I'm just going to tell people that is so it is easy to clean up spills.

Second, the rubber gromet around the moonroof opening that covers the edges of the headliner is attached with VELCRO!

Mark - the trunk liner on the sides is short of the top, the covering on some items is electric tape, the wiring on the rear view mirror is covered up with an ugly sleeve... the list goes on. However, look closely at the competition. The Taurus advantage is the fit and finish of the interior... others I drove had serious issue of misaligned trim and squeeky, rattling dashes (toyota avalon and camry were the worst). There is cost cutting by all, but the Taurus has more soft touch sufaces than most, and none of that gray and silver painted cheap plastic that is overused on toyota and honda and hyundai.

... the hollow cheap plastic dashboard pieces (acres of it) in Azera, passat, and LuCerne drove me nuts!

Noticed that the two-toning is getting negative comments from some people....

So how is the Taurus now that it has a couple of months on it? I am considering the Limited AWD - winter is getting close.

Can't say enough great things about it. I've owned mine since July.

I have a new 2008 Taurus SEL also. I bought it in October. I love this car, but when I make a sharp right or left turn or go over a speed bump or up or down an incline, the suspension system makes an awful noice, kind of like a one-horse buggy ride! I am so disappointed. Does your car make any suspension-related noise?

Katie, you need to take this car straight (do not pass go!) to the dealer for resolution of this problem. The mentioned condition should not happen.
