Replying to: vbonchev (Feb 29, 2008 7:58 pm) Just because EPA rating is 26/32 on xD auto does not mean that you cannot get better then that in real world driving. I recently went on a 400 mile trip with mostly highway miles and got 34.5 MPG and this is with only about 1000 miles on the engine. So, in reality YMMV. I've driven both (not back to back). The Fit has it all over the xD regarding storage (amount and flexibility). Overall it seems much bigger with all the glass and lower window sills. Reminded me of the early Japanese examples of amazing space utilitization. The automatic Sport Fit I drove was extremely slow, freeway merging could be life threatening. Paddle shifting was a sick joke, with acceleration being so slow I wasn't sure if "anything was happening". Like Civic and Accord, replacing headlamps requires going through the wheel well (not my idea of fun in northern snowy/icy winters when they're more likely to be needed/burn out). The xD barely holds my golf clubs and pull cart behind the back seat. The 2nd row headrests block rear views when up and are torturous when down. The new 1.8L (stronger/quieter than the old Toyota 1.8L) and 5M works smoothly with decent acceleration. We'd be using the car for about 40k miles a year of rural (freeway/two lane) commuter/business driving, so fuel economy, reliability, and pricing are the top priorities. Rear seating and storage are secondary. We've had mostly very positive experiences with our Toyota/Lexus/Scion dealer, but the Honda dealer has pushy sales staff and the service department has dropped the ball a number of times. Scion pure pricing is a plus and the only available Fits in our greater area are automatic Sports. If this was our only car, the Fit automatic Sport would be tempting, but as a 2nd car and considering pricing, model availability, and dealerships the xD wins in my book. As far as cargo space, definitely the fit hands down. As far as driving, the XD hands down. The seats were far more comfortable in front and in back. My friend in the back complained that is felt like you felt every movement and bump in the Fit, but the XD was smooth. I felt that acceleration in the Fit was jerky and trying to up an incline was a little hesitant. The brakes were far more jerky in the fit. The XD was slightly slower on the start but easily gained speed smoothly. The fit handling was much better, but I live in a major metropolitan area so if you can't gain speed and sustain it you will get killed. I love the sound adjustment on the steering in the XD. I think the Fit would be a great choice in less trafficy areas, where you do not have to get up to speed and maintain it. I also like the fact that if you have to take an animal to the vet by yourself, that the front passenger air bag won't enable unless over I think 65 lbs. Stereos with the Fit sport an XD are both great and both allow me to use MP3 hookup. The Honda salespeople were rude and pushy, the Scion salespeople were friendly and easy to work with. In the end, if you have to drive in high traffic, highly aggressive areas, or have more than two people in the car, than the XD. If you are a college student, need storage space, or just drive in suburban or rural areas I would suggest the fit. Both are great cars, just fit different needs. The XD was slightly slower within the first thirty seconds, but made up for it afterwards. I can easily get in and out of traffic with the XD, and it is close to my old 3 liter v6 as far as pickup. The Fit just hesitated to much to be useful on the freeway. It would be like driving a Geo with everyone whizzing around you and honking.

My odo reading is 1350miles 55mph -> 48 mpg (average highway) 65mph -> 43 mpg (average highway) Mix highway/City (my commute) -> 39 mpg I love the xD, high visiblity seating, sturdy built, great sound system, mpg computer onboard.. I used to have a civic, was partial to Honda and checked out the fit sport a lot before buying an xD. It is not the kind of engine that auto magazines write about, nor is it something you are likely to brag about at a drive-in on a Friday night. But this engine (2ZR-FE) provides an excellent real-world performance and a good mileage, which has long been the trademark of Toyota's 1.8 engines, aka hidden gems. Scien xD carries on with these admirable characteristics. We have a Fit, but can certainly appreciate what xD offers. You cannot go wrong with either.
