In addition to the differences you noted in your post, there a few more differences between the Sport and the Base model that you didn't mention:
• The stereos are different. The base has a 160 watt 4-speaker system. The Sport has a 200 watt 6-speaker system.
• The Sport has cruise control; the base does not.

You ask "What is it about the Fit Sport?" I wanted an economical car that I felt was attractive, and that had the options I needed (yes, the cruise control and AUX input are important to me). I think the Sport looks better than the base model - and I use my paddle shifters all the time Therefore, the Sport was the best choice for me. I could have been ok with the base model, but the higher price was worth it to me.

If I were to buy a Fit, there's no question that I would pay the difference as well. Economy matters to me, but not at the expense of hating the car I drive every day. Driving may often be a chore, but it can be made more or less pleasant by the choice of vehicle. Nevertheless, I can see that some would choose the more austere model and be satisfied in a different way.

I had to comment after having test driven both the Fit and XD. I was disappointed with the xd. It was ok but not as good as the Fit. The passenger area and cargo area doesn't compare to the Fit, the xd's engine was coarse in my opinion, the shifter didn't feel as good and the fit handled better. I even think the Fit looks better IMHO.

Scion xD by waytoofun

I have owned my new Scion xD since September. I love the car. It has good acceleration and keeps up with traffic on the turnpike with ease. Until winter and the cold weather hit, it maintained a pretty steady 35 MPG. Now, it's about 32-33, depending on how much stop and go traffic we are in. Since the xD is basically listed as a commuter car, I don't know how many of you have tried the back seat belts. I have had 4 people in my car and the seat belt behind the driver is in the wrong place. We took the car back to the Toyota dealer and they even admitted the seat belt was in wrong but could do nothing about it unless Scion ordered a recall. We got in touch with Scion and after a few weeks, we were told that at the present time, there were no plans for a recall. The person sitting behind the driver has to clip their belt into the buckle that is there for the middle seat belt. Let's be realistic, there is never going to be 3 people sitting in the back seat of a Scion xD but there is a defect there and as far as I'm concerned, it should be taken care of by Scion. So, all xD owners, check your rear seat belts and see if they are positioned right or not. They are bolted in so you can't just flop them from one position to another. Other than that, love the car, and did right from the test drive.

paddle shifting what? well the paddles ofcourse!

who cares how much hp you have? its fun.

the sport has lower profile tires which aid in handling , and they are larger than the base 14 inch steelies.

not to mention a very nice leather wrapped wheel, cruise control, fog lights and mp3 player connectivity. and the sport stereo (as already mentioned) sounds worlds better.

there are PLENTY of reasons to buy a sport. but if you opt out its no biggie, i understand wanting to save some dough, just don't hate on those who opted for something different. just because YOU don't see the value in it does not mean others wont.

Bought an xD. Test drove both Fit and xD multiple times. Yeah the Fit is larger, and the sport has fog lamps and security system.

But the xD has a personality, power and does not feel like a tin can. In the end I paid $100 less for a base xD $15,300 (with mats) than for a Fit sport.

Getting 34MPG on my first tank of gas. The MPG readout is good, Fit does not have one.

The EPA mileage are estimates. With any car there are people who get more or less than the ratings. One thing I noticed with the Fit, there are owners who get as low as 20mpg mixed to as high as 40mpg on the highway.

Come on man there is no way anyone can get the EPA estimated by the manufacturer, the only way is by coasting and never go over 2200 RPM. and about the people that get 20 MPG with the fit they eiher need to figure out that there is more than one gear or they need to reconcider their math knowedge. My wife has a Fit and when she drives it she gets about 37 MPG and when I drive it I abuse that car all the time I get about 32 Mpg.
