I owned the 1.3 liter Jazz and it was a good car for the city which I drove in 95% of the time. Economy was ok at 10.5km/l but I think it should have been much better. I am thinking of getting an economy car like the Fit when I get back to the US next year but I am worried the mileage will be very low like it was here in the Philippines. Other than that the Jazz was a great little car and fun to drive. The Yaris which the Scion is based on (but not the same) is terrible. The shifter is notchy and even my wife doesn't like it. Currently we drive a Toyota Hi-Lux 4 door pickup with a turbo diesel and it gets much better economy even in the city than the Jazz did. We just haul ourselves around mostly but the roads are so terrible where we moved to I was afraid the Jazz would not survive the potholes and home made speed bumps that are everywhere. But in the US I think the 1.5L it is a good choice as I did drive one a CVT when they were first coming out 2 years back and while I'd prefer the Manual shift over the CVT. I think the Scion will be worth a try if I can find at least 2 dealers in my area. It's a good second choice possibly because Honda is gouging on their prices for the Fit. MSRP or higher and I don't like that. I'd really rather have a diesel and I think the perfect car would be a diesel Fit but we won't ever see that. If Honda makes a diesel i will probably buy it over the Fit but the Scion looks likes it's certainly worth a test drive. Right now if no diesels are available the Fit is my first choice and the Scion is in 3rd place next to a Subaru. Hey we get a lot of snow in 3 months!

Honda Fit vs. Scion xD Real World MPG by orbit9090

It is interesting that Edmund's Observed Fuel Economy Combined for the
Honda Fit was 3.3 mpg greater! than the Scion xD, especially considering
that the new Fuel Economy Ratings only predict a 1 mpg difference.

The Edmunds supplemental chart shows that the Fit achieved 32.1 mpg vs. the Scion's 28.8 mpg,
a Honda benefit of almost 9% (28.8 / 3.3 = 8.73%).

when did edmunds decide that the fit was full of flaws? do they secrety have it out for honda?

ALL of the fits attributes were COMPLETELY downplayed in this comparo. Having known that edmunds has tested the car numberous times, i dont why they had 'vtec inspired expectations of EXTREME performance' from the fit. Leave mugen to deal with that.

I still like the xd, but still wouldn't take one over the fit...and the fact remains that even if the fit failed miserably, it made a very good showing for itself, considering it is 6 years OLDER than the xd.

its about time the competition caught up.

I am wondering what the result would have been if the base Fit had been compared to the xD, so the Fit would have enjoyed a huge price advantage. I think, equipment-wise, it would have still been a close comparision, and dynamically there would have been little difference with the Fit--except maybe a little softer ride, which the reviewers seemed to like (on the xD). The Fit's safety equipment and cargo-hauling versatility are the same, base or Sport. Auto reviewers always seem to review the Fit Sport, but IMO the base Fit represents the best value for the Fit. If I am going to spend $16k for a car, there are several other good alternatives. For closer to $14k, the Fit makes more sense to me.

cargo space behind the 2nd row by bobw3

It's good to now have some competition from Toyota to the Fit, as the competition will push Honda to make some improvements. I have and like the Fit, but no car is perfect.

But even though I haven't seen the Xd in person, the cargo space behind the 2nd row seems a lot bigger on the Fit, so given that they're so even in a lot of other areas, that would still push me to buy the Fit if I were choosing today.

Yeah bobw3, the article doesn't show those figires but behind the 2nd row the xD has 10.5 cu ft and the Fit has 21.3 cu ft!

I find it interesting that they show a photo of the back of the Fit with the hatch and seats up, but there is no photo of the xD in that configuration.

The Fit was the long-termer by bennetpullen

They only said so in the fine print of the article but the Fit they used was the Edmunds long-term Fit with over 12,000 miles on it. I'm sure this hurt it in the performance testing against the brand new tires on the xD. I find it interesting that the Fit got a 63.3 mph score in the slalom in the comparo but it got a 67.5! in the its full test. In the Fit full test they said "the shifter is awesome" but in the comparo they said it felt "loose/worn/tired".

I think it was kind of lame, the xD seems like a very nice car (I really liked the xA as well) but they way I look at it the xD is bigger on the outside but smaller on the inside, isn't as fun to drive, gets worse gas mileage, is more expensive and despite having a faster 0-60 it is slower 0-30 and they are virtually even 0-45.

The Fit had some 12k miles on it. You could say that it's motor was thoroughly broken-in. The xD, on the other hand, was brand new, with about 450 miles on it. I would expect the gap to narrow somewhat with time.

With regard to the shifter/degradation issue, I'll repeat what I posted in the Staightline thread:

I shied away from commemting on the Fit's shifter in the text of the article, partly because of the mileage issue. The comments you see on the specs page are the raw, uneditied feedback from the test driver who did the track testing. When the Fit finishes its long-term test, we'll address any degradation issues at that time.

As for the Fit vs xD handling results, remember that these cars were track tested on the same day at the same track by the same driver.
