My First Truck...HELP! by supratturbo
Aug 01, 2007 (10:49 am)
So I've owned sports cars all my life. I went from a Celica to a Supra to a 350z. Now i'm ready for my first truck. My specs for the truck are as follows:

1) 4 wheel drive
2) Spending around $14-15k
3) Something reliable
4) Gonna be towing a quad and eventually a boat (not sure what size yet but would rather be safe than sorry)
5) Gonna be taking in the mountains to go snowboarding
6) Not partial to diesel so something that takes unleaded gasoline.
7) Something Used is Ok obviously for spending only 14-15k.
8) Something with not too many miles (under 55k)

I think that's all for now. Could anyone give me some suggestions PLEASE???

Thanks

I think your best bet would be a 2001-2007 Chevy/GMC 2500HD with the 8.1L GAS engine option. They come with bulletproof Allison 6 speed transmissions and there quite a few out there ( www.autotrader.com ). Overall these are very reliable. The real only weak point on these models are the front suspensions. However there is a company ( www.cognitomotorsports.com ) that specializes in the Chevy/GMC front ends and already has a bunch of bolt on parts for this particular truck that will make the front end pretty much bulletproof. You should be able to get one for around $12,000-$15,000 which is a lot of truck for the money. With gas the way it is, these things aren't going to be flying off the lot so most dealers are going to be willing to deal. Gas milage on this particular vehicle really isn't as bad as you would think. With the 6 speed trans at highway speed, it can actually get pretty respectable milage. The 8.1L(496) has been around forever and is a very good engine.

What pickup should I buy guys? New at this! by cutecaroletx

Hello all! I am new at all of this...I want to get something comparable to the Ford's King Ranch Cab in amenities, with the same sticker price. I need a larger cab (looked at the Dodges megacab) but I dont want the price to go over $ 36,000. With all of the promotions out there, it does appear that I can get that price down to $30,000 or less. I am interested in a V8 1/4ton truck that is smoother riding and will last. Any ideas? Have looked at Chevys T series and Rams 1500 series and Fords 150 King Cab. Where can I get the most bang and look and ride for my buck. When I talked to Ford, they were saying that the torque of Dodge did not give the performance of Ford...but then when I spoke to Dodge they said that they have an engine which only utilizes the additional torque when needed. Confusing for a cute girl over here...chuckle. Any of you fellas able to help me here? Want to be able to hook up an ipod as well. They were telling me that I could hhok up an ipod but the slot looked more like an MP3 receptacle. Help me please...thanks EVER so much.

Hi Carole, welcome aboard!

Sounds like you're looking for a 4-door truck with lots of luxury. One thing you didn't mention is whether or not you wanted 4 wheel drive - that will make a difference in the ride category.

My initial recommendation would be a 2007 Chevy Silverado 1500 LTZ or GMC Sierra 1500 SLT. These are the newest on the road, will probably ride the best of the domestics in the category, and can certainly match the luxury of the others. Even though I'm a Dodge owner, I would steer you away from the Mega Cab Ram 1500 simply because it's really a 2500 with a "1" on the door instead of a "2" - much heavier truck, rides a bit harsher and won't get the best mileage. The Ford F-150 King Ranch SuperCrew is certainly the "plush leader", but as you noted, comes with a "plush" price tag to go with it.

With gas prices where they are, most dealers are willing to meet a reasonable price request to get you behind the wheel, so don't feel that you're stuck with the price on the sticker. Use the Edmunds price listings here and see how close to invoice the dealers are willing to go.

I noticed you didn't mention the Toyota Tundra or Nissan Titan in your initial post, so I'm not sure if you're ruling those out. Be glad to follow up any more questions you have, and I'm sure others will chime in as well.

I have the same question but for a different reason, I plan to pull a 7500 pound trailer and want to stay with a 4-door half-ton truck. I am partial to F150 with tow package and 5.4V8, however if I can expect better mpg with a Chevy or Tundra then I would check these out.

If anyone can help in my discussion, please let me know.

My 2 cents...F150 would be a good choice, but I'd wait until the new design 2008's or 2009's (not sure exactly when they will be redesigned?). I am sure Ford will trump the the new Tundra and the GM's in power. If you cannot wait, I would HIGHLY recommend driving a new GMT900 with the 6.0. 7500 lbs is alot, regardless of stated towing capacities. Personally, if I were pulling 7500 lbs regularly, I would go with a 3/4 ton with the Duramax diesel, it would last forever and not even know it's back there. But if you want a really nice, well built 1/2 ton with plenty of power, go with the 6.0 Chev or GMC with the Max trailering pkg. The overall build quality of this truck is unmatched IMHO. Sure the Tundra has more power, but the GM is a tighter, nicer riding truck. No comparison when it comes to class and luxury. And they have very similar towing capability. This is my opinion, but you should drive them both, preferably for a day/weekend if the dealer will allow you to. A 10 min test drive is insufficient to really get a good "feel" for the trucks overall build quality.

The most recent issue of Truck Trend compared the GM and Tundra head to head and included towing 27ft toybox trailers as part of the test. Long story short, the Toyota won.

Either truck would make an excellent choice. GM does offer an automatic locking rear diff while the Tundra (and F150) is only limited slip.

Dodge wouldn't make my short list.

Next year Nissan will be offering a 6.5 ft bed with their crew cab, they have a great motor and are competitively priced. Nissan also has a manual locking rear diff.

The F150 is my favorite truck. I'm holding off on my next vehicle purchase to see what the next generation will be like.

If I was forced to buy a truck today it would probably be the Toyota...that 5.7 liter motor mated to a 6 speed is hard to pass up.

Whilst my Denali is in the shop to fix some scratches, I've been driving a '07 F150 crew cab with the 5.4. First gear is a doozy almost like a granny gear. After that it is all downhill. Truck is anemic at best. No wonder Ford is losing ground to GM.
