Well I guess that would depend on how big the boat is!

Most vehicles have a tow rating spec listed in the owners manual. Just remember that towing does put added stress on the driveline components of your vehicle. If the boat ramp is slick or if the boat is too big and heavy for your Sonata, then you could have a problem on your hands.

Hi Mr. Skunkcar

Well I am in the UK, and have a 2.0 Sonata CDX automatic, (2002 model). I have towed two of the boats I have owned with it, with no problems at all, one scaled about a ton and a half, the other is around the ton (UK imperial).

The boat I own now is a Swift 18 sail boat, and it sits on a single axle trailer, don't know it's behind the car, most of the time. I have to say that I am really impressed wih my Sonata, we have owned it for three and a bit years, and in that time, all that has gone wrong with it is a sidelight bulb blew, (5 minute fix) and an engine sensor went down which stopped the car, towed into my local dealer, who fixed it on the spot with a new sensor.

The car has 42000 on the clock now, but is still a very comfortable and competent car, I know that by any standards that aint high mileage, and at the next service will have new front discs and pads fitted. Back to your question though, and I reckon that by now you will already have the answer for your question, seeing as you asked it back in June (I have only just joined this Edmunds thing), I would reckon that with 3.3 litres to play with, and given the cars GVW (gross vehicle weight) that you would have no problems! Here in the UK, we only get offered the 3.3 in the very top of the range Sonata, the 2.7 V6 is only available in the pre. new shape Sonata like mine.

Nice creamy engine though, but with UK fuel prices being what they are (crippling).........most folks go for the 2.0 (2.4 in the later cars) which has pretty good fuel consumption, or the diesel versions, which have very good performance and very good fuel economy, also excellent for towing with all that extra torque!

Well sorry for banging on a bit.

Have a guddun, Charlie.
