Article comments for Full Test: 2008 BMW 535i - What does BMW's new twin-turbo 3.0-liter inline-6 engine do for the 5 Series? This 2008 BMW 535i test car with an automatic transmission effectively equaled the acceleration of a 2006 BMW 550i equipped with a manual transmission. The 535i's 5.5-second acceleration to 60 mph proves a sedan doesn't need the 550i's V8 engine to be quick. (more)

hpia4v2, thanks for sharing on their history

I owned a 1996 MB E320 (W220), the first year they came out with oval headlamps. It was a nice car, but I traded it in for a 2004 Lexus RX330 AWD because I lost control of my E320 in the 2002 snowstorm, and I got stuck in a snow pile and could not get out. Thank God no one was hurt, and the car did not have a scratch on it either.

My 2001 C320 handles better in snow and ice than my 1996 E320.

I am looking for an AWD to replace my C320 in the very near future.

I tested both the Infiniti M35x and G35x and didn't quite like them. I tried the BMW X5 3.0i and had trouble claiming in and out of it, although I enjoy driving it once I got in.

The 2008 C-class will be out soon and could be a possibility. I have never owned a BMW (owned 2 Acuras, 2 M-Benz and a Lexus), so the 535xi looks interesting. I'll venture out to give it a try soon.

Ummm, no. E-Class chronology:

1986-1995 - W124 model designation.
1996-2002 - W210 model designation.
2003-2008 - W211 model designation.
2009-???? - W212 model designation.

Best Regards,
Shipo

I was working for MB-USA (then called MBNA) when the W210 first came out, and I have to tell you, LOTS of Montvale employees piled the new E-Class into snow banks. I'm not quite sure what changed between 1996 and 1997, however, by all reports, the 1997s were no where near as fidgety in the snow as were the original version of the W210.

I know that my Wife is looking at BMW as a replacement for her current car, but I sure have a tough time looking at a car that doesn't even have an oil dipstick, and the only way to check the oil level is to drain the oil into a measuring pan. That and their 'sealed for life' transmissions, etc. - need I go on? The whole 'sealed engine' concept that enables the dealerships to fleece their pockets really rubs me the wrong way.

I'd never own one of these past the 50K mile warranty. If the Wife ends up getting one, I'm going to insist it's a 4 year or 50K mile lease. No way am I going to end up being the one to hear 'honey - the car's broken again - can you fix it???'. No thanks...

Thanks for the correction.

So W124 model is the longest in the market. I probably should refer to the model before the tear drop headlights, instead of Wxxx stuff.

Shipo, thanks for the info. It really makes me feel better now knowing I wasn't alone in hitting the snow bank and getting stuck in my '96 E320

Yeah, it wasn't just you. I remember comments like, "Oh geez, if the E320 is this much of a handful, I can't imagine how bad the E420 will be in the snow." Funny thing though, by all accounts, the E420 was a pussycat in the snow and apparently whatever changes they made to the rear suspension geometry and/or the traction control software of the E420 trickled down to the 1997 E320.

Shipo

Is it confirmed that a new, redesigned 5 will be out next fall?
