Article comments for Comparison Test: 2007 BMW 335i vs. 2007 Lexus IS 350 - When we matched these cars against each other in 2006, the newly redesigned 306-hp Lexus IS 350 ran away from the 255-hp BMW 330i with a quicker acceleration to 60 mph by more than a full second. On the other hand, that BMW outmaneuvered the Lexus in every objective and subjective handling category. (more)

As an owner of a 335 I have to comment. Lexus is a great vehicle and you cannot go wrong with either car. However in the real world there are other things to consider. First of all 70% of luxury vehicles are leased. If you are leasing a BMW there is absolutely no way cost of ownership is more than the Lexus. BMW includes everything including oil changes, brake pads and rotors and even a clutch if its a manual... The only thing not covered for four years are tires. Also if you want a manual the IS 350 isnt an option. Also if you live in the northeast and you need awd again the lexus isnt an option and finally if you want something sportier and you want a coupe again the lexus isnt an option. I own an 08' 335XI coupe and there is nothing lexus makes that can compete. Also for an extra $1,999 you can get a Dinan software update for the 335 that improves fuel economy, hp is increased to 384 and torque to 421... When it comes to performance the Lexus isnt close.

On the other hand...

If one prefers buy over lease then all of the sudden the 335i doesn't look that good of a choice. Why not lease it you ask? Because generally I'd like to keep my car for at least 5 years and the most important reason, I drive about 20k miles a year.

Granted if one is looking for AWD, coupe and manual then he/she is out of luck with the IS350. However, if one is looking for RWD, sedan and automatic like me then that's a whole other case, it's all about what one is looking for.

Wait a minute, so you are saying with he Dinan software, the hp is bumped to 384, torque to 421 and with improved fuel economy at the same time? That's a little too good to be true don't you think?

OK, OK. Forget the improved fuel economy. Just give me the HP and Torque.

Back when I was driving a 4-banger Honda Accord and gas price around $0.99/gallon that was exactly how I think...

Not so much now.

funny.... gas is 1.89 for 93 octane after hitting 4.69 in late sept in chicago depending on which gas station you visited. obviously that new low price won't last long. i have the 335i sedan with sport package. just bought it on 11/28/08. my wife previously owned the 2006 lexus is 350 before trading it in for the lincoln '08 mkx last december due to baby number two and us needing more room.
the IS350 pulled hard off the line but traction control could not be defeated, and the 335i felt quicker. Lexus had the better interior and some people may say better reliability, but that is why i have a warranty and i am not here to debate reliability. the 335i's torque and pull off the line and it's driving feel seemed to be a step above the IS 350, even if the 335 is only a half second quicker for 0-60 times depending on which car mag you read. the sporty and comfortable feeling of the 335i and its breathtaking and furious acceleration is second to none in that class. i just made an audi rs8 owner think twice about his $140,000+ purchase as i gave him a run for his money. yeah, he won, but he only pulled ahead of me by a half length after 80mph and i hung with him by a length up to 130 mph before we wisened up and slowed down. he probably was a novice driver, but it was fun to drive like an idiot on an empty highway on xmas day morning. my advice: drive both cars on several occasions and make the best decision for you and only you. i laugh because some people take their dogs for a morning run to get their juices flowing. i take my "300+ horses" out of their stable and run them like their is not tomorrow. And then i go for a short walk after my ride and cool down.
