Article comments for Comparison Test: 2007 BMW 335i vs. 2007 Lexus IS 350 - When we matched these cars against each other in 2006, the newly redesigned 306-hp Lexus IS 350 ran away from the 255-hp BMW 330i with a quicker acceleration to 60 mph by more than a full second. On the other hand, that BMW outmaneuvered the Lexus in every objective and subjective handling category. (more)

The article didn't reveal anything that we haven't already know. The 335i is fractions faster, has better handling and is a better 3-series than the IS350 (kindda obvious here... However, I would still like to find out how can a "comparably equipped" IS350 be more expensive than the 335i?

I recently decided to trade my 328i in for a lexus is350. I didn't even consider the BMW due to all the issues and cost going into the 328i almost every few months. The BMW does have a certain intangible ride that most car mfg try to emulate without success. However, in my opinion, BMW suffers from reliability issues. I noticed all the posts comparing the new 335i against the is350 and how the BMW is a couple of a tenths quicker than the Lexus, etc. But have you all seen this article, http://www.edmunds.com/insideline/do/Drives/FirstDrives/articleId=120061 This has got to be embarrassing for BMW. Sure it rides like it's on rails and might be faster than most of it's competitors but BMW needs to start addressing it's quality issues. I have seen the old BMW 2002s riding around and those things were built like tanks and drove BMW reputation for quality, handling, etc. but these recent generation BMWs seem to tout the handling but suffer on quality. So my decision was simple, if I wanted a ride that handled like a go cart on steroids (not a knock, I like the handling) then the BMW was the obvious choice but if I wanted a balance of performance and reliability, then Lexus.

Especially in a case where the car will be the ONLY car, like mine. I personally don't think there is that much difference between Lexus and BMW reliability. Lexus might be slightly better but it's not like BMW is much worse either. For me, the reliability issue between these 2 vehicles is moot. |

Maintenance/Repair of this level vehicle as well as the difference in mpg is NOT big enough to sway the choice of perspective buyers. The perception might favor the Lexus but the reality is that the high tech repairs will be very approximate. Regards, OW

Replying to: circlew (Jun 17, 2007 10:16 am) My point is if you spend the kind of money on these cars then don't you expect the mfg to be concerned with quality? It's kind of amusing that you would reply to the question of quality with philosophy. You then qualify your statement by stating that tech repairs will be approx for both cars, perhaps the cost may be the same but why don't you measure the frequency of which car is in the shop and then add cumulative cost for each. There's a reason why Toyota with what some/many call bland stying, design, lack of soul, etc is poised to becoming the biggest car mfg in the world. Take a poll and see if what you say is true that maintenance/repair of these vehicles is not big enough to sway the choice. I would guess that many people will tell you otherwise.
