Article comments for Comparison Test: 2007 BMW 335i vs. 2007 Lexus IS 350 - When we matched these cars against each other in 2006, the newly redesigned 306-hp Lexus IS 350 ran away from the 255-hp BMW 330i with a quicker acceleration to 60 mph by more than a full second. On the other hand, that BMW outmaneuvered the Lexus in every objective and subjective handling category. (more)

As far as I can see, comparing spiritinthesky's test, other posted 1/4 mile E.T.'s are closer. There was only one posted IS350 run but it does show a more even comparison. I stand by around 1 car length to the 335 in any given run. That's real close.

These cars sre all dead stock. Ya gotta love the 335 AT run!

IS350 - Sport Package, E.T. 13.518 105.620 mph, 55 deg. F.
335i - 2 exact E.T. Runs - 13.610 105.010 and 104.1 MPH.
335i coupe - E.T. 13.633 103.230 mph, 60 deg. F.
335i sedan - E.T. 13.476 104.420 mph
3351 AT! - E.T. 13.251 104.100 mph, 52 deg. F.

I see you've moved your Saab trolling from the Porsche board to the BMW/Lexus one. Sorry to tell you, it's still a loser of a pitch:

Scandinavian lifestyle and luxury of Saab and Volvo to be an enlightened choice and a refreshing experience of a higher-class

Your "higher class" Saab and Volvo are owned by GM and Ford, respectively. And I can just as easily visit Sweden and experience the Scandinavian lifestyle while driving a Porsche, Acura, Lexus, BMW or anything else that is the real deal, not a Detroit owned subsidiary.

As best I can tell, the only reason anyone today would buy a Saab is because they have some contrived need to "be different". Fine by me. But there is a significant price to pay for that choice in getting an inferior product by today's high end competitive standards and having resale value that is right down there with the other "high class" GM products. The various Saab 9-3 convertibles I test drove in 2005 were, to this day, absolutely dead last in driving dynamics, handling, steering and braking of any of the other cars I drove in their price range. If anyone needs an excellent definition of "cowl shake" in a convertible, they need look no further than the Saab 9-3.

If you are going to attempt to overtake a BMW or Lexus at speeds of 60+ mph, you better damn well be doing it in a straight line, or have your life insurance fully paid up.

I've seen those "owner posted" 1/4 mile times and questioned not necessarily their truthfulness, but their relevent accuracy in making comparisons. There can easily be a couple tenths differences in 1/4 mile times based upon weather conditions, temperature, elevation of the track, track surface conditions, etc. Doesn't seem like an apples to apples comparison that you can conclude too much from, especially with a limited number of data points. And, in the case of the 6-speed manual transmissions, driver ability also becomes a factor.

The closest apples to apples might be the IS350 run to the 335i automatic transmission run - which shows a .267 second difference (close to 3 car lenghts). But again, I don't think that this is a meaningful factor in deciding between ELLPS for most of us non-boy racer types. I know I personally wouldn't choose an automatic in the 335i in a thousand years, even if it was faster than the stick in a drag race.

I agree, but you could say the same for the spritinthesky test.

At the end of the day, this post-racer boy type would rather drive a 330i than an IS350 at the end of the straights for sure!

The 335i makes the power play from Lexus a moot point.

Of all the posts I've ever read on edmunds, that is one of the more "interesting" ones. I own a 335 coupe (MT) and I have driven an IS350, and I can tell you right now that the saab and volvo do not stand a chance against the 328 and IS250, let alone the 335 and 350. Look at edmunds' story about the new 9-3 which can now do 0-60 in a stunning 6.2 sec (way to go saab)... and yet you somehow have the idea that this car has a chance against the Lexus and the BMW... and let's not even get started about the fact that you are choosing to compare front wheel drive car against two rwd performance minded vehicles... even the vaunted S60R has no prayer against the 335 and perhaps the 350 in any acceleration test and would struggle to keep up in handling with the BMW. Face it, the swede's definition of sportiness is nowhere near as good as the Germans.

"The Swedish counterpart are much more refined in style, a class of its own, and legendary safety and reliability that BMW and Lexus can't match."

-I dont understand where your getting this information from. Though, Saab and Volvos are nice cars I wouldnt say that theyre more reliable. Ive owned one Saab 9-5 Wagon, and it wasnt nearly as reliable as the Lexus' that Ive owned nor even as exciting as my BMWs. I would consider Saab as a GM product with a Swedish accent.

I agree. More like the Catera that morphed into the CTS...only not as beautiful to behold!

Never thought I would see the day when someone would compare a Saab to a BMW. As it stands, Saab's are re-badged GM cars. And with such limited appeal, questions remain as to why the brand has not been killed off like Oldsmobile. Kudos to everyone being polite, instead of going nuts on this guy. He may just be a stand up comedian.

I need to stay off these boards....
