If you get your rocks off of being an idiot at a stoplight, this is the best, most foolproof, car to use to reach supreme idiocracy. You don't even have to think about shifting gears, since even in the SL and SLK models, AMG engineers are incapable of inserting a manual transmission. Probably just as good, since their SLK350 6-speed feels like a Peterbuilt dog-leg compared to the 6-speed in a 911 or, better yet, a $30k Honda S2000. Of course, there are times when you might want to use a $75,000 to $175,000 car to do something other than mimic a funny car on a drag strip. And maybe even drive on some winding roads on which you have to actually turn the steering wheel. At which point, the AMG's fall so far behind a BMW M car or Porsche as to not be comparable. The Edmunds article falls short in making this distinction. Perhaps the editors needed to allow more time for their lungs to clear of burnt rubber. The AMG E63 may win the long drive contest on the local driving range, but it can't even make it on the PGA Tour, let alone, compete for the US Open. Bottom line, I happen to own a 911S that is, in fact, as quick and fast as an E63, assuming you know how to drive it. And, if you do, it will reward you in the other 99.5% of your miles far, far, far more than the single purpose AMG. In fact, so will my former Honda S2000. But, fortunately for AMG, there are a lot of prospective buyers with fat wallets and low IQ's. |

The 545i is a lot more fun to drive with it's razor-sharp steering and curv-hugging capabilities. I haven't driven the E63 AMG, but if you want power AND luxury, I'm sure this car delivers. However, I'd rather stick with my 545i, which has albeit less power, but is still fun to drive at probably half the maintenance costs. It is probably more agile as well. The Mercedes is a classier car, however. It all boil downs to what you want most from a car.

Replying to: unbiased1 (Feb 02, 2008 7:57 pm) I ordered an E-350 4-Matic wagon several months before the '07 model year was announced and before the E-63 was a dream. Does the E-63 have the 4-Matic drive train? It's a must have for us. Thanks. |
