Article comments for Driving Test, Indian Style - For my passenger, Hasib Khan, this is just another day at the office. For the past 15 years, he's worked as a driving examiner in Mumbai, the bustling metropolis in Southwestern India that used to be called Bombay. Khan typically tests five people each day, passing an average of three. (more)

The WWW is full of sarcasm about driving in India. Over past one year I have worked on making a series of short video's providing driver training and education (rather than criticism). The aim of the video's is to move beyond the traditional clutch-accelerator training provided by the otherwise friendly neighbourhood driving instructor.

All the video's are available at http://driving-india.blogspot.com/

The 14 video's currently available cover following topics -

Video 1: Covers the concept of Blind spots
Video 2: Introduces the principle of Mirrors, Signal and Manoeuvre
Video 3: At red lights, stop behind the stop line
Video 4: At red lights there are no free left turns
Video 5: The Zebra belongs to pedestrians
Video 6: Tyres and Tarmac (rather than bumper to bumper)
Video 7: Merging with the Main road
Video 8: Leaving the Main Road
Video 9: Never Cut Corners
Video 10: Show Courtesy on roads
Video 11: 5 Rules that help deal with Roundabouts
Video 12: Speed limits, stopping distances & 2 seconds rule
Video 13: Lane discipline and overtaking
Video 14: Low beams or high beams?

You never think about these things, driving conditions in other countries, until you see videos and read stories like this.

I couldn't do it. I have a hard enough time with LA traffic.

Driving in India...and elsewhere by bostondriver1

Good story. There seems to be no shortage of stories by people sharing their exploits with the Indian roadways and licensing process. Readers should compare how they do it in India with how it is done in China, Poland, Japan, and--even more grisly--Boston. Look at link title, a blog devoted to what they call driving in Boston.

I think if you go to a foreign country it will always look like a crazy crazy country only afterall.

42,000 accidents in USA may be more than 85,000 accidents in India per year, if you understand that the population is four times in India compared to USA.
