Article comments for Comparison Test: 2007 BMW X3 vs. 2008 Land Rover LR2 - We've brought together two modern approaches to combining the comfortable wagon with the multifunctional truck: a 2007 BMW X3 3.0si and 2008 Land Rover LR2 SE. We've already had a look at the features of each, so this is a comparison of performance, not appearance. (more)

So you'd still take the LR2 if you were not likely to ever go offroad?

Well I would hope some people would use common sense when driving a car and not do those kind of things.

They are two very different cars for different kinds of people. A few years ago anything with a 0-60 of less then 7 seconds was squarely in the sports car or high end sports sedan realm. People seem to forget those things.

I said based on looks alone. I'd need to drive both to say more. Except that I'm biased against getting an "SUV" that cant go offroad.

Sorry for not replying for so long but here's an update:

7,600 miles and I need to get an oil change,

2 problems:

the navigation screen became very dim in bright sunlight, seems like it was adjusting the brightness as if it was night, shutting down and restarting cleared the problem, I've seen this 2 times, spaced several months apart (first time I thought it was something I did)

the rear right speaker has a strange resonance when listening to classical music (especially piano), not noticeable with other types of music, going to have the dealer take a look

And just in case someone from Land Rover stumbles across this post:

PLEASE FIX THE BLUETOOTH/BLACKBERRY COMPATABILITY PROBLEM!

I’ve noticed the other Land Rover models claim 100% compatibility with BlackBerry.
Don’t make me feel like a second-class buyer...

Thanks!

Report seems to be right in line with what Car and Driver reported in their testing. It's nice to see two different test organizations come up with similar rankings and results!

As for which one I'd drive, it's neither. Too much money and too much fuel guzzled for either of these.

It would be great to see how these big boys compare to other SUVs (why not some of the Subarus, Toyotas, etc. ? ).

I wonder how the X3 and LR2 awd systems differ from each other, as well as wrt the Subaru Outbacks'.

Are the X3 and LR2 in-line systems, or does either use an off center engine shaft to drive the center diff?

it seems the LR2's the only one with extensive controls for the AWD balance. Apparently it is a Haldex system (amazing how many AWD cars use Haldex ).

The most complex system I've seen is the GT-R which uses drive shaft to send power from engine to rear wheels, and a second drive shaft to send power from the rear wheel diff to the front wheels.

You are right, the LR2 has an inline 6 cylinder engine. However it is only 2 1/2' long and is transverse mounted.

Are there any illustrations on-line that show the actual LR2 driveline layout?

Speed/Shifting of '06 X3 vs. '08 LR2 by schott

I spent days agonizing over purchasing another X3, RDX, Mazda or LR2 as well as a couple other cross overs. After a few months and 1500 miles, I'm pretty happy with my new LR2. With respect to Speed and Shifting:
The X3 was relatively quick, but always seemed to be in a low gear. The RPMs were usually over 3K before shifting into another gear and it seemed like I needed go over 50 to drop the RPMs to closer to 2K. Problem is, I seldom drove on the Interstate and the speed limit is usually 35 or 40. I brought the X3 into service to have it checked, but it was only moderately improved. I had a Mercedez 230 and it would always shift quicker into another gear with lower RPMs and had a little pop when I was in lower gear and needed more speed. Frankly, the LR2 shifts more like my old sports car in gears 2, 3, 4.. I believe the LR2 has just as much pick up if not more than the X3 when you're going over around 20. However, there's no question that the LR2 is more sluggish than the X3 from a stop. Still, the LR2 is quicker than most cars from a stop and I don't consider it a problem. Because of the better shifting with the LR2, I get about about another 1mpg in gas mileage. Without Interstate driving, and a lot of stop signs and hills, my LR2 is only a little over 14MPG. This is probably the worst case on gas mileage for LR2 - but slightly better than the X3.
