Article comments for Comparison Test: 2007 BMW X3 vs. 2008 Land Rover LR2 - We've brought together two modern approaches to combining the comfortable wagon with the multifunctional truck: a 2007 BMW X3 3.0si and 2008 Land Rover LR2 SE. We've already had a look at the features of each, so this is a comparison of performance, not appearance. (more)

I know everyone's driving habits are different, but I currently get 20.4, (last 10 fillups combined). By comparison my Tahoe with same driving habits got 15.5. The milelage does get better after a break in period.

Comletely Torn between the Two! by misterjim

After hours...days, really...of research test drives, etc, I'm still torn between these two vehicles. The agressive leasing of BMW now has the monthly lease payments lower than the LR2...which eliminates one of the factors for consideration. I think the design is hands down better inside and out on the LR2, as is the Nav and premium stereo. I also like the feel of the buttons and dials on the car...it feels right. However, although I haven't experienced any of the transmission hesitation reported widely, the X3 just is a much better car on the road. If it looked a bit more agressive and less like a car my girlfriend would take to the mall- I'd be sold. All the performance quality in the world doesn't matter if you're feeling like a chick behind the wheel...

I agree the x3 does not look that good especially compared to the land rover. I have major complaints about the LR2's interior, the wood seems fake, materials are lackluster, need I continue. I think the LR2 although it shares some mechanical components with the Volvo, is still going to be a miserable vehicle on long trips especially when attempting to pass other vehicles. the x3 should not have these problems. I don't know how you feel about japanese vehicles, but if you don't mind them, the mazda cx-7 might be something to consider, it mixes the Land Rover's styling with the Bimmer's performance. The Acura RDX is something else to consider, but it is so ugly I wouldn't seriously reccommend it. One x factor to consider is LandRover is currently for sale, and who knows who will buy it, raising potential questions about future product quality and reliability. no the bimmer is not my first choice for a small suv but it is the best choice available.

The LR2 has massive torque available down low plus a smoother/quieter ride then the BMW so no it is not going to be miserable on long trips.

The BMW will punish you on uneven or poor road surfaces and be miserable on a long trip.

As for the interior well that is subjective. Just this past week I have had several people say they like the LR2 interior over the X3 or the RX350.

Perhaps a better way to decide is to consider what else I have in the garage...in my case a 2007 Mini Cooper S, which is about as sporty and driveable as they come in that price range.

I'm not clear on how the low end torque will be much benefit on freeways - the 0-60 speed on the LR2 is reportedly much slower. However, I do agree that the interior feels much better. The deal breaker may be that unless I want a silver/gray X3, I may have to pass on Xenon headlamps (somehthing I've had for several years).

I had a 2004 MINI Cooper S so I have no problem with hard riding cars. I drove that car 500 miles one way between CT and VA twice a month for six months back in winter/spring of 2004 and 2005.

I like firm riding cars with aggressive suspensions. The key word there is CARS not SUVs or trucks. Once you move the center of gravity up and the seating position higher then a hard ride and firm suspension feel weird at least to me. Drive a Cayenne sometime and you will see what I am talking about. Every time you hit a bump your feel like a bobble head because your body is so far away from the center of movement.

Passing prowess is not about 0-60 it is about 50-70 or 40-60 mph acceleration. I would be very interested to see the difference between the X3 and the LR2 for those tests.

Good input - I looked into the passing speed - according to MotorTrend - the LR2 took 4.9 seconds to go from 45-65, while the BMW did it in 3.8. Braking distances were the same.

Ah so a second more for the LR2 which isn't all that much really. In a real world situation you wouldn't even be able to tell the difference between 4.9 and 3.8 seconds.

I had the same dilemma between the LR2 and X3. Spent months researching & comparing SUV's and came down to these two. The X3 offered a better financial deal however it's a hard ride, it does feel like a chick's car or some baby ugly looking X5. To get to the comparable features of the basic LR2 takes at least 5-8 grand...and the X3 will never get closer to the style and look of the LR2. (at least in my perception). Another point is, everywhere you look there is an X3 somewhere. The LR2 is new and only a few are enjoying it so far. So the LR2 won!

I've had it for about a month now...and everytime I am driving by a common ugly X3..I am reinforced I made the right decision. True Land Rover is not in the most reliable car list, but this one was built with that tag in mind from the ground up (freelander fiasco) so hopefully the errors were corrected and if not the 4 yr full warranty/maintenance should be enough..
