Other things we've noticed are: - I'm not sure about comparison to the wagon, but rear seat legroom in the X3 is much better than the sedan- makes the whole rear seating area feel more spacious. - It's easier to get in and out of the X3 compared to the lower sitting sedan. The new 3 series sedan is better looking than the prior version, and that's saying something. The same cannot be said of the X3. It's just plain ugly. OK, I said it. And I'm glad I said it. And I'm not taking it back. I know that's heresy in edmunds.com-land, but clearly love is blind when it comes to edmunds.com and BMWs. The body style looks like someone glued a previous-version 3-series front-end onto a mazda-3 5-door. Actually, that's a bit insulting...to the mazda-3 5-door, which looks much better. The X3 is like one of Conan Obrien's skits where he shows how the offspring of 2 random famous people might look, which is hilarious in its hideousness. I mean come on, for any of you who think the X3 is attractive, I have to ask: how drunk are you? I know I'm bashing the X3 pretty hard, but considering the love-fest in the article, I think we need an alternative POV to add balance to this article and discussion. In the crossover (ie stationwagon) category, aesthetics-wise the X3 is a good idea gone bad. The afterthought rear seats really bother me too. I mean if you are going to take the time to design a third row make the rear seats usable to someone besides a 10 year old. Not even an average height 10 year old they would have to be a short 10 year old in order to use the X5 rear seats.

Just purchased the LR2 after seriously considering the X3. It is cliche to point this out, but the only way to decide is to test drive both and pick the one that suits your tastes. I read all of the reviews and test results, but at the end of the day it truly comes down to personal preference. We preferred the understated styling of the LR2 and the ride comfort. And oh yeah, the cheaper price. Nothing wrong with the X3 other than having to work with obnoxious salesmen at Perillo BMW in downtown Chicago. And also the fact that every other person on the north side of the city is driving BMWs and Audis. I know it's oversimplifying, but the X3 rides more like a wagon. We live and work in Germany and tested the American Spec LR2 and X3, after driving both on short test drives we went back and drove the LR2 on an extended (two day) test drive because we were curious about the fuel economy and interior space. We drove the Land Rover close to a 100 miles, half on the autobahn (80-85 mph, mostly on cruise control) and the other half on secondary roads (speeds from 30 mph through small villages to 60 mph on rural two lanes. The roads had lots of curves and elevation change.) and returned a 23.9 mpg average (the LR2 we drove only had 500 miles on it). The suspension is comfortable on rough roads and I thought the steering worked well at highway speeds or during slow maneuvering through narrow village streets. The seats are comfortable (though if you are a bit wide you may find them tight) and prevented sliding in curves. To test rear room we put the rear seats down and placed two mountain bikes upright into fork mounts in the back (front wheels and seats were removed) with plenty of room for helmets, wheels, and other luggage. We really enjoyed out LR2 experience, though we admit we are a bit biased because we own a 2003 Volvo V70 and find the steering, transmission, and engine in the LR2 very familiar (many of the LR2's components are shared with the the new Volvo S80). Despite the competencies of the X3 (still can't say I like the Bimmer's looks) we are thinking seriously about ordering the LR2 for a winter delivery.

The new Honda CR-V takes the cake for hideous! The BMW X-3 is not much better. I quite don't understand the reasoning behind the X-3, why not just buy the BMW 3 series model and if you want performance buy the M Series. At least you would have more room. All in all, I have to say that I am really hating the CUV look more and more as each day goes by. The soft round corners and oval shapes remind me too much of the Ford debacle with its Oval Engineering with the POS called the Taurus. SUVs should look chiseled, rugged or at least retain the elements of such. Very few do nowadays. The emphasis has been too much on sport and now we have high riding station wagons that look like sports sedans (stupid!). I agree the X5 looks great but way out of most normal people's price range. At least you would have more room." My wife's '06 X3 has much more room than the '06 330Xi I owned until this past Monday. In particular, it has a lot more rear seat room, easier ingress / egress, and can carry much bulkier items. All of this is accomplished in a vehicle that is almost the same length and width as the 3 series sedan, although it is taller. My wife had an '01 330Xi prior to the X3, and she greatly prefers the X3, including the higher seating position. To me, the 3 series sedan and the X3 are different types of vehicles. Bruce
