Article comments for Comparison Test: 2007 BMW X3 vs. 2008 Land Rover LR2 - We've brought together two modern approaches to combining the comfortable wagon with the multifunctional truck: a 2007 BMW X3 3.0si and 2008 Land Rover LR2 SE. We've already had a look at the features of each, so this is a comparison of performance, not appearance. (more)

I was wondering if you had read the article - My feeling was not only a lack of knowledge, but it seemed prejudicial. The second article that will probably have less readership seemed more informed. I wonder if it was a point-counterpoint setup.

Exactly it really seemed like the writer had made up his mind from the get go. He/she made the facts fit their world view even if they didn't.

I have never felt the LR2 dip its nose badly under heavy braking.

I also question the schizophrenic starter. Was it really acting up or was the driver unfamilar with the push button start system in the LR2?

This article also reminds me of a Blog by Karl the editor in chief about the SC Range Rover. He complained about the buttons and how he couldn't figure out what they were.

He asked what was up with all the pictograhs and why isn't their more english language labels on the car. When you sell a low production car in countries all over the world you can't use english language labels. Many countries that the Range Rover is sold in don't even use western type characters. Pictogaphs are just easier to use and they should be pretty obvious after a couple minutes use.

Then he complained about a bunch of other things that made no sense too. None of it fit any of my experience with hundreds of Range Rovers.

I noticed you guys didn't mention the torque of the LR2, more headroom, legroom for both front & rear occupants, among many other of the features that make the LR2 a good vehicle in comparison with the new BMW X3. Land Rover did an outstanding job on the LR2 and can be loaded with price of less than what you'd pay for just for the base BWM X3.
The BMW X3 is a nice machine, but who in their right mind would take a $45,000.00 plus vehicle off-road for fun? I also like the fact the LR2's cargo area can be made flat as well and offers ample cargo room when the seats are folded. The X3 does not offer that fold-flat capability. Sure it has the HP and the better MPG, then again the X3 has been out for how long? Maybe that 30 MPG Diesel with loads of torque will be out soon for the LR2 in the United States. Hmmm. Whatever the case, I think your article is just a bit too biased on all the strong points of the X3 versus the weak points of the LR2. In terms off off-road capability between the two vehicles. If you were to put the X3 and LR2 in a more challenging off-road environment than done in your comparo, the LR2 would simply outperform the X3.

Okay, I'm 6'2" and my head is not firmly into the headliner surrounding the sunroof! That is a bunch of hogwash... The only complaint I have is the seat width for the front seats but I also need to lose some of my arse too (typical Porky Pig American). It is nice to have that snug fit for rough terrain, I hate sliding all over the freakin' place. I'm not impressed with the X3's headroom or legroom at all. So in a world of compromises I'd take the LR2's snug narrow seat over the typical knee crunching coach class airline seats of the X3.

Yep..... I about laughed when I read about the adjustable suspension and then really scrutinized the credibility of this article afterwards. I think I must have missed that option box for the adjustable suspension. The 0-60 times was rich! I chuckled over that one for a while. noticed all the high points of the X3 versus the low points of the LR2?
X3 is nice, but the LR2 is not as bad as it is presented in this biased review. The LR2 has been tested to the Nth degree in all kinds of environments. As the Freelander II in Europe it has already been rated 5 stars in crash test ratings (best in its class), and just recently earned the prestigious Fleet Award in London. The LR2 is very solid!

Most Americans have no idea the global reach Land Rover has and the necessity to have pictographs over English. As for the schizophrenic starter comment "What the heck is this person talking about?". No problems with ours. The drive home from the dealer, encountering stop and go LA rush hour traffic and the occassional mash the brake pedal stops I did not have the nose dip syndrome sniffing for truffles issues spoken of. Was this reviewer really driving an LR2 or was it something else? I'm confused!

Just to let you know, no longer V6 LR3s (only V8s). Obviously you did not test drive the V6 LR3. Severely underpowered at some 216 horsepower.

Hmmm. For all the preferences of the LR2 over the X3 in your review, something is amiss here when you made that comment for a real Land Rover at $41,000.00.

I doubt you'd be happy with the LR3 in 216 horsepower form with all its heft. Not to mention it would lack all the options the LR2 provides at same price.

The LR2 is a Land Rover, make no mistake about it. Though it may not be a 4x4, it is not touted as one by Land Rover. The Terrain Response is above par than what most others give for AWD capability. The LR2 is a very capable SUV off-road and on-road; more so than many 4x4 vehicles.

Well, I'm 6'4" and my head is into the headliner, so go wash your hog. Feel free to call Tom at LR Marin and ask him to confirm, as he witnessed the event.

Not everyone has the same inseam or torso length, so what fits one tall person may not fit the next.

If they tried to take the X3 into the same off-road situation that a LR2 can go through then the X3 would be broken.

The service advisor at my dealership is almost 6 foot 4 and he fits fine in the LR2 but he doesn't fit in the Range Sport.

It all depends on your body type.

I think Edmunds should retest the LR2 with another car and some other editors. There is some obvious bias going on and/or a problem car. Maybe the testers were former Freelander owners.
