I'd also like a little more information about methodology, if possible.
 
I have to say I am somewhat surprised to see many of the same posters who have disputed the accuracy of CR's Reliabilty Survey (with its 1.3 million unique respondents) not have the same types of questions about the Most Wanted survey.

I agree, and on that note I would be interested to see a second list correlated against the first: a list of what voters actually bought/owned. I say this only because the most-wanted winners correlated so poorly with the tops of the sales charts in each category, in some cases.

Bingo! I think you'll find that people who vote with their checkbooks are the ones we want to hear about. Hence my comment that sales figures are the ultimate "vote".

How can "most wanted" be related to sales? Most people want more than they can afford. They almost always settle for second best or less.

Well I see it like this: If the sales figures do not reflect the amount of desire people manifest to have for the product, then the product is priced too high. You are right, people "want" and its up to the producer to give them what they want...e.g., people want a Miata and they can usually afford it because it doesn't cost the same as a BMW Z4 but looks nearly as good and performs really well. AKA "a winner".
 
On a positive note, which I think (I hope) some of us here were also emphasizing, it's really good that people are even DESIRING some GM products for a change....
 
desire + cash = purchase
 
HOWEVER--if you can't even afford a Cobalt in today's liberal credit market, then your vote really does skew the results in a negative way.

For example. How many folks buy a Camry when they would rather have an ES350? I cannot imagine anyone buying the Camry if the ES350 was easily in their price range.

I dunno; my dad passed over the ES for an Avalon because he didn't want to spend the extra money for the 'L' badge.

Probably not a great example of "wishing higher", as the ES350 is not all that far away from a Camry, to be blunt about it.

Just for reference, I drive a '95 Chrysler Concorde with 235,000 miles, and I have no plans on buying a new car any time soon.
 
I did however vote for the Most Wanted List, and in my mind this survey is about desire. What car in each category do I desire the most? Not which can I afford. Not which do I think is most practical, but which do I desire (regardless of why I desire it)!
 
That's why these results were so surprising. People found a GM minivan more desirable than a Sienna? A CTS more desirable than a BMW 3 series or Audi A4? A Saturn Sky more desirable than a Mazda MX-5? It just blows my mind.
 
Either I missed a memo somewhere, or a whole bunch of people suddenly developed a hankerin' for a slice of GM heaven when I wasn't looking.
