If we eliminate that segment in which GM traditionally loses money in buckets, which is the under $25,000 class, this isn't as good news as it looks like.

Unless GM can make a profit on small cars, whether people like them or not or whether they sell a billion of them is sort of beside the point.

But I do think their under $25K line up is a lot more attractive than it's been in a long long time.

It looks fair to me and I did not get to vote. Face it GM is still number one in America. Just because Toyota sells a bunch of cheapo junk cars in third world countries to have the highest car count does not make them number one here. Toyota won where they have clear winners. The LS460, Tacoma and RAV4. They rest of the stuff they peddle is mediocre. Even though people may buy a lot of Camrollas does not mean they would not like a nicer Buick or Cadillac.

Toyota has clear winners up and down their product line, Honda does as well...

Your last assertion is so far off the mark... nicer Buick or Cadillac. Err, no, I think not.

You're trying to elicit some laughs right? I mean, you got me laughing.

I wager, people that buy Toyotas or Hondas and drive them to essentially trouble-free 150K or 200K (or more) miles are likely to be very satisfield with their purchases, steer very clear of the domestics, and buy another Toyota or Honda.

gagrice wasn't trying to make you laugh he was just stating an opinion that is very logical. A Buick or Cadillac is a nicer ride than a Toyota, so it isn't so far fetched that a Toyota owner would get a better driving experience with one of these cars. I wouldn't be wagering too much about how long a car will last because Buicks are known to be rather trouble free and longevity is also one of their well known assets.

No automotive car line has great cars up and down their line-up. Toyota has several average/mediocre vehicles in their line-up just like Ford, Dodge, Nissan, etc. Vehicles on the market today are not bad. Some are average and others are very good.

ok, well, he's made me laugh, and you're providing me a good chuckle as well. perhaps we are just mis-communicating.

i would HAVE to say a buick or cadillac would provide an uninspiring ride. for me it starts with appearence, and follows from there.

perhaps you'd like to clarify what you and gaprice mean by 'nicer ride' or 'driving experience'. is it driving dynamics? is it fuel economy? is it control layout and simplicity, or driver visability? is it responsiveness, luxurious materials, longevity, turning radius, cargo space, price...? i mean along some dimension, i could agree with you. i just don't know what you mean.

for example, for me? i don't prefer the driving dynamics / handling of a toyota. i prefer instead the road and steering feedback hondas are known for. *perhaps* there are some cadillacs that have better steering and suspension setups than (insert toyota model), but i don't think that was where you were going.

i do think both Honda and Toyota have great cars up and down their line-ups. can the same be said of cadillac? i don't think so. but, you could argue the case. i'm willing to be swayed.

"Vehicles on the market today are not bad".
On that most generalized statement i have to disagree. If we were to qualify it and say, there are some domestic vehicles on the market today that aren't bad, well, i wouldn't argue with that.

If I were in the market today for a midsize car I would take the Buick over the Camry. Buick has a better reputation than Toyota for decent handling, quiet built car. The LaCrosse CXS is roomier and equally priced to the Camry XLE. 10 years down the road you will be glad you bought the Buick instead of the Camry when you have to do any repairs. Plus Buick has a better warranty. Top that with the LaCrosse is better looking than the Camry. I have written off Honda as their dealers are so arrogant I cannot cope with them.

gagrice, you just aren't "stuffy" enough to do buisness with that honda dealership. You need to tilt your nose a little higher.

Well they are pretty arrogant. My local honda dealer acted like it was a priveledge of mine to buy one of their cars.

The Acura dealer I baught my TL, from was nice during the sale process but would not go to bat for me when I needed their help most. I regret not investigating them more as I found several complaints on them from the better buisness beureau after I started having problems. If I would of went across Dallas, and shopped at the other dealer who has a good standing with the BBB I doubt I would of had the problems I had and probably would be still driving my TL, today. The morale of my story is a dealer can make or break a experience and perception of a brand.

The dealer is more than 50% of the equation. My wife would have bought a new Lexus years ago if not for the lousy local Lexus dealer.

On topic, I would say that the Edmund's list is supposed to reflect what people would like in a car. Not always what they would end up purchasing. A person may like the BMW X3 and can only afford a RAV4 or CRV. "Most wanted" does not tell the whole story as to what is sold. Me I want a Porsche Carrera, wife says no way Jose. Practicality ends up ruling the day. I want a home on the beach here in Hawaii. We will end up with a retirement home on the hillside with a nice view of the ocean. Compromises are made and many folks end up with second choice, a CamCord. If 20 year old prejudice did not rule their thinking they would have done some serious test driving and bought a Buick.

I'll ask you this question gagrice. Should a 20 something year old husband and wife like myself with a couple kids be embarrassed driving a car like a LaCrosse or Lucerne ???? I and my wife are both in our 20's I age (28) my wife age (25) and both like Buick's. The Lucerne SUPER, is so attractive I might still end up with one. Sure the 09' CTS-V is #1 followed by a regular CTS at #2 but the Lucerne Super is #3 and the MKS, depending how it looks could be #4 or jump all the way to the top for all I know. A lot will depend on value and what I do. If Ford, runs one of their red carpet leases they are known for I still might end up with a MKS. I might not buy anything but another used car and invest some of my money I would save by doing that but I'd still like to own a nice new car within' the next couple of years. If the Velite Convertible was to come out I would have one without a doubt. I told my 1st born he might be up for sale but I don't think he understood what daddy meant as he is only 3. I showed him the Velite, and he said he liked it. I told him if GM, ever makes daddy that car we will have one and I'll buy him a cool pair of shades as he likes sun glasses.

As far as buying a home on the beach my dream home is on the shores of Lake Michigan, in Western Michigan. Near South Haven or Saugatuck. One other dream home is buying a house on Lower Scott Lake in Pullman Mi. I'll likely end up with dad's house on Lower Scott, hopefully a looooong time from now.

Let me tell you a little story. A close friend is a Buick salesman. He left and went to sell Toyota for a year because Buick was not selling that well. He returned when he realized how much better the Buick cars were than Toyota.
