Yes I am definitely having this back windows down noise problem too. It is so loud and annoying I have to roll up the windows. I can't stand the noise.
Did you find out what is wrong with this car or is it just a bad design or something.
It sounds like a loud wind tunnel with big blades running.

There is a terrible thumping noise when ever I roll down the back windows while driving.
Does anyone else have this problem? If so what is the solution. This is so annoying that I have to roll up the windows. The car seems to be running fine and nothing wrong with the electric windows.
It sounds like a helicopter is flying just above the car. It can make someone go crazy.

Yes, many have reported this problem. I have noticed the noise too. It's a physical phenomenon of a resonance chamber, just like inside the pipes of an organ or when you blow over the opening of a glass bottle at just the right angle. It will happen when the right combination of circumstances occur with the vehicle: proper size opening, properly located opening, volume of the car's interior, and the relative wind speed outside the vehicle. It doesn't just happen in the Prius, either, but in many other vehicles. The only thing you can do to stop it is to adjust one of the 4 variables mentioned above when it occurs. Window opening size is properly the easiest to adjust.

Thank you for your immediate response. I was hoping it wasn't serious. Thanks again.

I know, it would take up all the trunk room, etc.
But, boy it would be fun getting 40mpg with the top down!
Any one else out there salavating for this "option"?

I have an o5 prius and noticed the same thing. I dirve with the back windows down to get the hot air out at a slow speed for a few minutes then roll them up and go with the air conditioner. It's a must in Arizona.

I am about to buy a 2005 Prius, and when we test drove it at highway speeds we experienced the heavy "thrumming" noise when the rear window was down. But my wife and I just laughed, because our current ride ( a 1995 Buick Park Ave ... blush ) does exactly the same thing. Guess the "problem" has been around for a while.

I never drive with windows open and even then, there is a lot of drive train noise especially at highway speeds.(The planetary and sun gears are really spinning)
For some reason it doesn't bother me (iPod, XM, CD's, GPS or I simply fall asleep.

I really like the idea of side-view cameras. The current Prius is not the easiest car to see behind from, and any additional help with viewing side traffic would be very welcome. I never use the rear wiper/washer. I enjoy the privacy a dirty rear window affords; I just turn my head or use the side mirrors.

Heated, power seat(s) and removing the HVAC from the screen and putting it out in the open on the dash somewhere. It is annoying to have to bring up "Climate" on the screen and push to make selections. Go back to the dials and buttons and get it off the screen. Especially the fan speed! My wife is distracted by the brightness of the screen at night. Is there someway of blacking it out without also blacking out the rest of the dash, such as the speedometer, etc.?
