I believe there are a few connections that could be checked. First (and most vunerable to weather) is the sensor on wheel bearing/hub assembly. Somewhere in engine compartment (don't know where) is where all the connections from the wheel sensors end up (ebcm maybe). There is also a large connector underneath vehicle just behind drivers seat that has a lot of connections for various electrical components in the rear (305 conector).

I have a 2002 Pontiac Aztec which is releasing when braking and also grinding. Why isn't this situation a recall if so many people are having problems with it?

I'm with you! If only I had known. My Aztec has cost me a lot of money since it was 3 months old!

It kind of depends on how one choses to look at things. If the anti-lock disable light didn't come on to let you know the brakes were now working like the thousands of other cars that don't even have the feature I would agree a recall might be in order.

Who knows what the issue is??? by jen30

A couple of weeks ago I started noticing that when I would brake while making a left turn my 2001 Aztek would make a slight grinding noise and you could feel bumping as you were turning. A couple of days later the Anti-Lock light came on, then went off a day later.

I took it to my mechanic who said it needed new brake pads (those were last replaced 2 years ago) and the rotors needed ground down (those were replaced 2 years ago and turned last year). He also soaked the springs and said they were rusted slightly and thought that was the issue with the bumping.

Got it back today...on my first left turn at a slow speed felt the grinding and the bumping. At one point the truck slid right through a stop and I couldn't get the brakes to engage properly. Then the Anti-Lock light came on again. I am afraid to drive it since I have kids and don't want to injure them or someone else out on the road. I've done a bit of research on this and it seems a lot of people are having/had brake issues that were similar but no one had a solution aside from changing hubs, new computer, re-wire, etc...and most of them did all of that and the problem still existed.

Anyone have a solution? I'm taking it in to the Pontiac dealer tomorrow but have a feeling I'm going to get the same run around with trying this and that while racking up a ton in costs.

While were at it I've been told for the past year and a half that there is a leak on my intake manifold. My mechanic said Azteks don't have the standard gasket and instead are sealed with glue that breaks down after a while. Is there a recall for this? It's starting to get worse, but with so many people having this problem I refuse to pay for it.

Grinding sound when turning is usually a wheel bearing issue (Most likely front). For the ANTI-LOCK (and perhaps AWD DISABLED ) lights the basic problem is communication with wheel speed sensors (also part of wheel bearing/hub assembly). If you have both the grinding and lights, there may be one hub assembly that is bad. If you have just the lights it stil could be the sensor or quite often its a connection issue, either with wire to one of the sensors or the c305 connector ( which also potential could cause starting, stalling, fuel gauge and other troubles).

It came out of the shop last week, with a new Body Control Module and Fuse block which indeed corrected the interior issues. Now when braking I receive the brake pedal backing up like I am sliding on black ice in 100 degree weather. Thought it was the brakes... went into BIG O where they were replaced last year and still under warranty... New brake pads put on and still have the grinding noice. Took back into dealer this week and they said I need a new wheel speed sensor. Picked it up today and still have the problem.. That give more ideas? The unit under the car which make a noice when the car starts... must be the anti-lock break system..? It seems to be much louder the last few months...

I assume they replaced wheel bearing/hub assembly (which includes speed sensor). Hopefully the grinding is gone. The problem with the c305 connector could also cause anti-lock to happen on dry pavement when not needed (pulseing of brake pedal) The lights are still on (or come on) correct?
