Both the ABS and AWD systems rely on the one speed sensor in each hub/bearing assembly to work, so the answer is no

My Aztec NIGHTMARE! by beanpole1014

Please tell me someone has foud the issue with this? I have a 2004 Aztec nightmare also. The AWD disable and Anti-lock break lights come on and the engine wants to cut out. Sometimes they come one and it drives fine or the breaks "grab". Other times i feel something in the steering wheel when i make a turn then shortly after the AWD disable and anti-lock lights come on. I have had this monster since October 13th 2007 and have been dealing with this issue since i got it. Also, its bad weather here and thats when it all seems to happen. Please tell me someone has found the fix to this mess???

Aztek Traction Control & Antilock Brakes lights come on now which means i have no traction control or abs. I have heard horror stories of this problem from hub sensors, EBCM to ABS computer and they end up with a large price tag and the problem still exists. Before I go to my mechanic any suggestions or a list things that might be the problem

It sounds to me like this is EXACTLY the problem. I had my HUBS replaced in OCT. of 2007, the ABS/AWD DISABLE light stopped coming on. Then, around Jan. or Feb. of '08, it would come on sporatically. Now it comes on when I make a right hand turn. After reading the posts here, it makes perfect sense that a wire or wire harness is bad. I am not going to spend another $750 on replacing the hubs until the wiring is checked. I am also going to call Pontiac and find out why this is not a recall issue if SO MANY POEPLE are having this problem. After all, its only the brakes, you can always use the car if ront of you to stop

Where is this wiring harness? by dfick

Hi All,

I want to inspect this wiring harness myself, do you guys know where it's located? Or is there some maintenance guide to the Aztek? I'm not big into cars, but I am a computer engineer so I might be able to fix mine.

I've been having this ABS/TractionControl problem for over a year now and have just been ignoring it (yes, it's dangerous) because I'm sick of fixing this car. I took it in for a noise issue and the mechanic told me to just drive the thing until it cant run anymore.

Unfortunately it cant run now. I had the ABS/Traction control system light come on again and now my car wont start for me. I turn the key and nothing happens. The battery is fine, everything seems normal, it's like the starter is disabled. The weird thing is that it seems like it's drawing current still, the engine is just not turning.

Does anyone know where this harness is or any ideas how to debug the engin not turning?

Thanks,
Dave

For the no-start problem, are thing in the cabin working correctly (lights radio etc.). How old is the battery (even though it seems fine)? You could check cables for good connection both at battery abd underhood fuse box (for positive one). Any clicking sounds from relays (underhood) when you try to start it?

For the ABS/TC thing, there is a connection to wheel sensor on every wheel that could cause troubles. There is also a large connector under vehicle and just to the rear of drivers seat that potentialy could have corrosion due to water intrusion. That could affect any electrical stuff towards the rear of vehicle.

Apparently there are 2 wiring harnesses. You want the BIG wiring harness. After replacing wheel sensors, having the problem reoccur and then being told I needed to replace more wheel sensors, I finally took a printout of this whole string to the dealer and said that all these people can't be wrong when they say the big wiring harness is the problem (apparently is gets worn, corroded or loose from its normally secured place). P.s.: our Aztek has 85,000 miles on it, so wear and tear isn't unexpected. I was expecting an argument with them but didn't get one, and they did their magic with the wiring harness and - knock on wood - the ABS problem hasn't reoccurred in about 3 months. Don't let the dealership intimidate you into getting the wheel sensors replaced. And as far as that mechanic who said to just drive it into the ground - I'd find another mechanic. This ain't rocket science and EVERYthing is fixable if one knows what to fix and how to fix it.

When inspecting the wiring harnesses I found that a rodent had chewed and completely severed several wires, which I suspect is related to my problems.

At the same time I'll ask them to do a thorough inspection of the wiring harnesses too to see if any are cracked or corroded. Hopefully they'll find something.

This is the unit that I think is the ABS/Traction Control. There are several connectors where wires come in (the "wiring harness" is the plastic piece that the wires fit into, which connects to the actual unit)

People please correct me if I'm wrong on this.

I think someone else said that there's a second, smaller, unit under the car on the driver side slightly behind the seat.
