#57 of 62 Help with a '87 cav

Hello all,
I am in dire need of some help with my 87 cav wagon. It has been very reliable but now has a stalling/ shutdown problem. I drove the car a distance, roughly 30 miles and it shutdown. I mean nothing, no dashlights no cranking nothing. I had it towed to my mechanic. Of course by the time it got there it started. So he found nothing. He tested for loose connections and let it run for awhile but it was fine. I am afraid to drive it now for fear it will continue to do this. Any ideas on what I can check? I am afraid if I cannot solve this problem the car is not long for this world. Thanks.

Okay, complete electrical failure? You should have the alternator bench-tested by a specialist and the battery load tested.

Thanks. My mechanic did that. I think it is a heat problem. Once the car cooled off( after the tow) it started and ran just fine and has been. I have never taken it for more than 15 mikes as I cannot trust it. Is there something that when it heats up cause a complete disconnect?

when you say "no lights" you also mean no headlights or tail lights? Or just no dash lights?
The only thing I can think of that makes a car go completely dead would be the ignition switch...but even then, you should still have parking lights at least.

The "no lights" refers to dashboard lights. It happened during the day so I really do not know about headlights or taillights, did not think to check them. I'm on my own on this one as my mechanic is reluctant to spend much time on the car. Aside from the dieing for no appernt reason it runs fine and gets good mpg, is not burning oil so I hate to just junk it. The problem really appears like something just disconnects. I had a similiar problem a few years ago when a wire broke. That was easy to find as it stayed dead. This is one of those annoying intermittent problems. Thanks for the help.
