The NASA bailout by meglassakt

Reply
I Hear NASA may need a bailout soon now too caz of some trouble with their latest most recent mult-million$$ pneudraulic electro-mechanical satellite or rover. When some of the banks give back some of that bailout money NASA will get some of that.
There are alot of rich people in Moscow(russia), maybe they can help.
Think I will take a visit to St. Louis to see the show, I need to get out for a spell.

Back in the late 70's and early 80's, house prices kept appreciating for the most part, even though the recession.

The war had ended and govt spending on the war ended. Inflation is not adding value to a home. If one is to buy/exchange housing, its a no win situation.

I think that the bad times that started hitting in 2000, and were exacerbated by the 9/11 tragedy, and then pretty much bottomed out around late 2002, would have been much worse, but lowering interest rates and relaxing credit standards sort of delayed it. Didn't make it go away, but just put off the inevitable. And now, we're finally starting to pay for it.

This is for the most part a true statement, except 9/11 caused a war. If not for the war things would have been worse. The war if anything fuels the economy. However, your 2000 DOT COM burst and intervention by the FED to create another bubble are right on the money. Add on that there is little room for the FED to lower interest rates this time and govt spending being the only other way to save us from the so called "rough landing". One could conclude that if and when the war ends, the economy will feel another ripple.

So the UAW is what hampering the BIG THREE by dallasdude1

If we are going to have a race to the bottom. Compete with the slave labor suppliers of imports and thereby reduce the American standard of living. To just say that they are superior is preposterous and an insult to intelligent people. Just get on with it and let them build our autos. To go back wards is no solution. Sooner or later the very workers can no longer afford the products they build (autos). Then too, the fewer players, the less choice. Less choice has always been bad for the consumer. It will lower competition, quality, and innovation. The consumer is better off with a level playing field and more choice. Its absurd to blame the current economic crisis on the UAW. All the players are hurting and looking to the UAW as a scapegoat is counter productive. If the Big Three close, we as consumers do not win.

Gary you do understand what supply chain means?

Yes I do. The mom & pop shops supplying parts to the automakers. That was clear in my copy and paste. My response to rocky was his assertion that ALL Japanese autoworkers are treated great. Evidently they are not. By contrast I do not hear a lot of rumblings from the foreign auto workers in the USA. My very high quality Sequoia was built very near to my POC 2005 GMC PU truck, in Indiana. Why would that be? Partly because GM puts more into labor and less into quality parts.

if union workers make $73 an hour then how long will it be before nonunion workers make the same, are you going to try and say nonunion workers do not want to make $73 an hour, - i would say not.

Maybe never. Toyota is threatening to cut back wages. For myself I always wanted more pay. I would say that is human nature. One contract we were dealing with a board appointed general manager that was not the sharpest pencil in the box. He offered us more in our 3 year Union extension than we asked for. The Union boss turned it down and we got what we originally proposed. The reason being is he was going to have to negotiate with AT&T after our contract was signed. The AT&T technicians would want as much as we got and there was no way the Union could get that from AT&T. For the 25 years that I worked for that company we always were at the leading edge of wages and benefits. Mainly because the company had difficulty getting people to work in the Arctic away from family. That was why we made more than the average US telephone Technician. Why does the UAW person make more than the Toyota worker right in the same state? GM cannot compete with Toyota on that playing field.

the fact of the matter is that not everybody can get a job there

I sure agree with you there. The UAW hiring practices have never been FAIR. Either controlled by family, affirmative action or good old boy network. The Hoodlum mentality at the UAW and many other Unions has helped alienate MOST of the US population against Unions. As a Teamster I had a lot of people look down their nose at me. I just laughed it off all the way to the bank.

Says who? GM already owes $70+ billion to the lenders. They cannot sell their cars at a profit with their high costs. They lose money every quarter. So just how are they going to pay back an additional $25 billion? It is money down the toilet pure and simple. If it is approved which does not look likely it will be a gift from all of US to the few of YOU. It will be more Spreading the Wealth Around. Just more Corporate welfare.

I am not sure if those AIG partiers were tossed in jail(maybe they will pay that cash back) , but i am beginning to think more and more of this bank bailout as an absurd sick joke - and none of the banks out there can help me refinance my 16% interest rate home loan ! Like, excuse me, this is to help the consumer

The last time I heard of anyone paying a 16% home mortgage was the the 1970s and early 1980s. Either you owe more than the house is worth or you have the worst credit on the planet.

I do think IF the government is going to bail out ANYONE it should be the homeowners. I was against bailing out the banks and voted against all the Congress people that voted for it. I can see renegotiating the homeowners interest rate to a fixed fair rate. Not cutting the size of the loan. A person needs to accept responsibility for their actions. Adjustable rate mortgages are bad for all but the wealthy to deal with. If you cannot qualify for a fixed long term mortgage you should not be given the loan. Selling homes to people with huge CC debt was just asking for the bubble to burst. It ran up the price of homes for legitimate buyers and caused the mess we are in today. No I do not believe the UAW had anything to do with the current financial crisis. They are partially responsible for the mess the Big 3 are in. A small part of the BIG picture.
