My perception was that Daimler looked at Jeep and the Mini van sales and thought it was going to be a money maker. Who's fault is it that they did not continue to dominate those groups? My understanding is that Chrysler was still doing all their own development in Detroit. I have a friend that is a web designer working for them in Detroit. They paid close to $40 billion for Chrysler and what did they get for the 80% interest they sold to Cerberus? I think it was only $7 billion. Not a good investment on the surface.

Personally I think it was a mistake for both. They both seemed to be dragged down by the merger/purchase. Were any UAW contracts lost in that whole deal?

Give me a break Rock. I know they are still there because my brother is doing it. In a year it will be a different story. Many are being bought out and my brother is taking early retirement in October.

Actually, I interpreted his statement as meaning that they make MORE than $27/hr. I rub elbows with UAW production workers on a daily basis and I have a pretty good idea of what their hourly wage is.

Steve posted a link the other day about 900 Chrysler workers in Fenton losing their jobs. That hits home, as I'm one of them.

As I mentioned in the past, I'm waiting for a buyout offer or early retirement package. After nearly 25 years with the company I don't want to leave without anything. Sitting around collecting unemployment benefits and SUB pay may sound nice but that's over a 50% pay cut for me. Plus, if the company sells out, files bankruptcy, etc., that SUB pay is on shaky ground.

I had an interview with Boeing last Friday. I was told it would last one hour. It ended up lasting nearly 1.5 hours as I sat there being grilled by 4 interviewers. To me that's a positive sign. I figure if they didn't like me at the start I would have been out of there the first 20-25 minutes. The job is affiliated with the IBEW (oh no, another union).

Having a familiar face involved makes it hit home harder for us too. Good luck with the job hunt!

Daimler did not know how to market an American car company that is geared for the average consumer. It is not the same as their high end products they are used to selling. "Dr. Z" Dieter Zetsche failed there.

I've heard that Daimler restricted Chrysler engineers in what they could do so their MB line would not be overshadowed by some less expensive American products. They certainly succeeded in doing that.

Chrysler wanted more exposure to worldwide markets and figured Daimler could provide that opportunity. Daimler wanted to get their hands on Chrysler's huge cash reserves. They managed to do that fairly well.

Norway, IMHO made a huge blunder once they allowed non-norwegian decent immigrants into their country. You use to have to prove norwegian ancestory to live in the country !!!

I got to laugh at the comment that my idea's are scary ??? What's scary to me is that after 8 years of secrets from the Bush/Cheney/Rove administration you want to put a guy who will expand unfree trade ten-fold into office and open the borders like flood gates so Anheuser-Busch, can hire non-union illegal aliens, and illegal alien truck drivers can distribute the finished goods for Mrs. McCain, all around the country. Now that's what scares me !!!

I'm not sure where you and 62' live but the majority of UAW-GM and all regular production Delphi, workers making $27 an hour in the plants around here have been long-gone !!!! No new hire UAW production worker at GM, will makes $27 an hour at least not for quite a few contracts. The highest you can make is $17 and change by the end of the contract at Delphi. My aunt just crossed the $15 an hour mark doing a job that use to pay $27 an hour. Now Delphi, is talking about shutting the doors on 2 more NA plants and consolidating into one plant. But yeah, lets elect John McCain, because he's the answer on the economy. We are already beginning to hear the terrorist threat card being played by Karl Rove, in the background of John McCain's campaign commercials. Will we fall for it this time ????

P.S. I just checked out the new TL first drive video and came away impressed. I'm not sure if I can get use to that snout but the rest of the car is just plain awesome and filled with "gadgetology" !!!! Perhaps someday their will be UAW-made Acura TL's

Hah! Terrorist threat? If they saw the devastation in North Philly and Camden done by deindustrialization and outsourcing, they'd think we'd been already hit!

I don't know how far $15-$17 goes in Michigan, but it'll only get you just over a subsistence living here in Philly. It'll get you a one-bedroom apartment in a marginal Lower NE neighborhood and a hooptie with minimum insurance. Entertainment will be cheap beer at the corner tavern and the antics of the drunks in said tavern. Forget about shopping at any place more upscale than Target.

Family is west of Flint and I live in a suburb of Detroit.

The majority of UAW-GM making $27/hour is still there in the plants that are open. GM is not Delphi. They have been going bankrupt for years. GM just got the agreement last year and it is going into effect now. The guys are leaving the plants now that took the buy outs but again most did not leave till now.

"Daimler wanted to get their hands on Chrysler's huge cash reserves"...

Help me out with this...if Daimler paid $40 billion (is that right???) for Chrysler, how could the "huge cash reserves" be of any help unless they bought reserves over the sale price???...did any US automaker ever have THAT much in cash reserves???

Then they sold them to Cerberus for $7 billion...I wonder how MB came out the winner on this...please educate me...I must be missing some facts...
