I realize that not all UAW workers lived like that. Indeed many lived in $150,000 homes and drove 2 cars with one being a year old. But there seemed to be a marked increase in the conspicuous consumption aspect after the Moraine plant replaced Frigidaire. The $450-500,000 homes are probably worth $325 now if someone will buy them.

Another aspect in this area of Ohio where Rocky mentions some households having a stay-at-home mom (or dad in the case of a person in our elementary school when our kid was there) is that this area also has the WPAFB with lots of jobs for non college grads and Lexus-Nexus along with Reynolds Reynolds and NCR. But some of those have gone recently to lower employment or left the area. The many Delphi (nee Delco) plants making shocks, struts, brakes, seats, dashboards, employed a lot of people along with Harrison Radiator (AC compressors for your Jags and Volvos and Rolls? along with GM vehicles and maybe some Fords IIRC from when I last toured that plant before it closed.

"If any nation in history has paid for crimes, it is Germany."...as an American Jew, I must agree with you...while they still hunt for those who actualy took part in Nazi "handiwork" (assuming anybody is still alive), and the memory of what Nazism can do stays alive, there is no need to punish current Germans who had no part of the atrocities...which is why slavery reparations are ridiculous for wrongs done 150 years ago, the offenders and the sufferers are all dead, along with apologies to Indians...

rocky: if you aren't afraid of socialism, I am absolutely afraid of you and your thinking and voting pattern...and the fact that there may be others out there like you who would turn this country communist, especially while the rest of the world has finally woken up to the fact that socialism does not work...for anybody...

Well Fintail, your thinking outside the box just like me pal !!! Is the U.S. afraid that NSDAP, might grab root again ? I don't believe that would or ever could happen in Deutchland, again but some form of a revolt is likely and very possible if their pseudo-capitalist, keep out-sourcing !!!!

Very well said Fintail !!!

I assume gagrice, is very well off financially but is he "rich enough" to have his voice heard ???? Joe Six-Pack, has no voice in this government and you have to be wealthy to be heard or have credibility. That is why it's so damn important IMHO to have unions where each person throws money into a pot to have their collective voice heard in Washington.

Well my family in Norway, is living large. They all have one home in the city and one in the mountains for weekend vacations !!! My generation will be lucky to be able to turn on the heat in their one-bedroom efficiency in the ghetto, let alone dream of owning a 2nd home !!!! I think because Fintail, is closer to my age he truely can understand my point of view !!! It's hard looking out of your Mega- McMansion, that some of you live in and comprehend what others in the world are dealing with daily.

Fintail,

Something else I will say and that is we would not be remotely close militarily if it weren't for the Nazi's. The Nazi's helped us technologically win the Cold War, and their genious engineers came to the U.S. after WWII and worked on Top Secret projects. There is lots of documentation out their to back my claims.

I want to share with you all a little video I found on youtube where BMW, well made some other "suspension" advancements in technology !!! -GRIN

Operation Paperclip...WW2 was about economics and technology. That's why so many documents about the period are still sealed. I don't think the big 3 or the UAW found any benefit though

There's a lot of crazy stuff like that on youtube, it's fun but a bit out there. However I have read about magnetic technology that was pretty wild...maybe GM stole some of it for magnaride

Nobody on these forums has the means to truly influence the powers that be. Old and big money calls the shots, just as it has for generations.

I believe support for unions will continue to wane, but as globalization continues to create negative effects for the masses in the western world, the pendulum will come back.

There's still a lot of money flowing out of Germany to special interest groups...I think that's the main reason. Keep people guilted and they will submit.

I do not believe it could happen again - people learned a lesson - but Europe is setting itself up as a participant in some kind of massive forced resettlement if their immigration trends keep up. People I know there are becoming very disenchanted, I would say it is some degrees higher than what exists here regarding illegals.
