#1 of 4 Six seater endangered species by linkman

My father in law is in the market for a new car. He says he wants something that will seat six (five adults and a baby in a car seat), so when my wife and I come to visit with our soon-to-arrive baby, we can all ride in one car (Baby, Mom, Dad, Grandma, Grandpa and Great-grandma).

The thing is, 90% of the time he's just driving one or two people, so it seems silly for him to spend the money (both up front and on gas) to get a minivan or giant SUV. Until now, he's pretty much exclusively driven small/medium sedans (Corollas, Camrys, Passats, etc.).

Yet it's really hard to find anything other than a minivan or giant SUV that reasonably seats six. Most wagons and small SUVs have third rows that aren't safe for a car seat, and aren't big enough for an adult. And it's nearly impossible to find a decent sedan with a three-passenger front bench.

So far the only six-seater sedans I've found are big, bland American sedans: the Crown Victoria/Grand Marquis, the Impala, and the Buick Lucerne and Lacrosse.

Is there anything else out there? I'm thinking we we should just ride in two cars on those occasions when we visit, or maybe rent a minivan if we really want to all ride together.

Any other ideas?

I hadn't looked at that. It fits the price and fuel economy requirements, but I'm afraid the third row doesn't really look any better than the third rows of most small SUVs. I can't imagine fitting an adult back there, and it looks like it would be a pain to put a car seat back there.

Thanks for the suggestion, though!

I think the Mazda 5 is a great six-seater. We fit 6 of us all the time, husband driving, Dad-in law up front passenger, 3 1/2 year old in way back with Mom and 17 month old in infant seat in 2nd row bucket with Grandma next to her in the other bucket. WE LOVE the MAZDA 5, I would buy another in a heart beat. Great gas mileage. All seat will lay flat and allow 6 feet of cargo. This car is awesome for a family of 4 or 5 with the occasional additional rider. Go for it.
