I believe that Chrysler offered that engine because that is the way the industry is going. I can't believe how many Escalades I see even with its gas guzzling 6.5L engine. POWER POWER POWER, even in these days of ridiculous gas prices is the way of the world it seems. O don't get it but I got the 4.0L myself just as a change of pace. I hate to be like my neighbor who has had Crown Victorias for the last 25 years - and so does his wife. Good car but you only can drive so many cars per lifetime and variety is the spice of life. I like trying something new - just like the 08 T&C is.

I think I have the same 3.8L engine as the 2001-2007 T&C, but it MIGHT be different as mine was the tail end of the previous model. I think mine is a 4 speed. If not, no, I really have never had any problem with power or acceleration. And I still own a 1995 SHO the MOVES so, I know what power and acceleration are.

I went back to a 2006 comparo that was DGC vs Ody--Motor Trend, I believe. It wasn't close.

Facts are facts, numbers are numbers. Unlike seat comfort, etc--its NOT a subjective. The 3.8 is not a strong engine. It might be reliable, it might be "fine for some of you, but its completely outclassed by newer engines from Honda, Toyota, Hyundai and even Chrysler.

The Ody gets EPA 17/24, btw. The 3.8 08 DGC gets 16/23. And the Honda 3.5 is a much more powerful engine. VCM or not, the Honda 3.5 is a better package, even from a fuel economy standpoint.

Toyota did a better job at clearing out their 07's than Honda or Chrysler did. I did not see the 07 on the lots like I did the others so their were no rebated vehicles to be had. I tested the 08 Sienna but just found the 08 T&C had so much more pizzaaz. To be fair after Toyota redoes their van it too will have some new goodies and they will be the one with the pizzaaz.

Facts are facts, numbers are numbers.

But Magazine differ, testing methods differ and testing conditions differ. As I've alway say.....CR is only good for numbers/testing, they have the best equipment and procedure, that's completely standarized, whereas the smucks at the auto rags are one day in AZ testing something, some another group in Michigan testing something else.....

Ok, fine.

Show me ANY test from ANY source that shows that the Chrysler 3.8 outperforms the Honda 3.5.

Go ahead.

"Class" is a subjective thing too -- and "numbers are numbers" is a joke when it comes to EPA numbers. I know exactly what my 3.8L does gas mileagewise -- did a Science Fair project with my kids using it a few years ago. We measured how various factors effect a car's mileage. Speed, use of the compressor, octane level, use of cruise control were compared. I can dig them out if requested -- but it was definitely better than 23 mpg.

I don't doubt that the Odyssey get very similar mileage - just nothing to make me get excited about. If it were a bigger difference perhaps, but..............

dennistc -- when we did that Science Fair project, you would be surprised just how much the direction travelled (wind) affects your gas mileage.

I can't believe we are comparing the "performance" of minvans. Be sure to spend beaucoup bucks developing those high performance minvans. Maybe we will see one in the Indianapolis 500 one day. LOL

I agree. I don't buy any family car, or van, based on 0-60 times or lateral G acceleration, or cornering power. We owned a 1994 Grand Caravan ES with the supposed super-anemic 3.3L V6, and never had any complaints merging onto freeways or acceleration for two-lane passing situations. Plus, it was an easy engine to work on - if needed, unlike either the Honda or Toyota engine. And, yes, those will eventually require work too. My brother's 2002 Ody went through two transmissions in less than 100K miles. When we finally sold our Grand Caravan last January, it had 162K miles, and the original 4 speed ECT transmission.

I think many of these folks who think they need 300HP, high-torque engines in their minivans should have begun their driving careers with 50 to 60HP economy cars. You would have then learned proper driving techniques, including seamless merging onto freeways and passing on two-lane roads. You don't "need" instantaneous rubber-burning acceleration in any vehicle, but especially in a family hauler like a minivan.

You're putting words in my mouth, I said nothing remotely like what you're stating. I'm just saying a 1.4 sec 0-60 mph time is meaningless for normal, sane people who know how to drive and merge.
