Is your truck a 2008? What gears do you have in the rear end? You can't possibly have the 488's. I have 5 different equipment trailers and although I have yet to pull my equipment anywhere and have not gotten over 8 MPG. I have a 2002 F250 / 7.3 automatic with 3.73's and a 2001 F350 / 7.3 automatic with 4.10's as well. Both have pulled equipment trailers for five years straight. Never a breakdown. No motor problems, no transmission problems, nothing. Pulling 12000 to 16000. I am fairly confidant that either of the older trucks would pull this 450 backwards and get 12 to 18 MPG while doing it. It just doesn't feel like there's anything under the pedal, and yet it drinks more fuel than my 96 Frieghtliner 14Yd dump truck. That gets about
9 to 11 MPG loaded.
I love the truck, it rides great, handles well and looks fantastic. As long as I don't actually drive it it's the sexiest $63,000 truck out there. Although for $63,000,
I could darned near have bought another Freightliner....
How can you be getting such great milage and everyone else is not?
Dissapointed in Maine...

Update:
truck has since lost 2 more engines.ford really is trying to do the right thing and figure it out. the engineer and tech guy are blaming it on the new emissions and smog laws by the epa to smother out the diesels.
ford is taking my xlt and has put me in a brand new lariet crew cab 4x4 for the same price i paid for mine.
i will continue buying ford prouducts they realized a problem existed and fixedit

Ford decided not to honor their warranty because the truck had been abused...even though all the proper paper work was given to them of all the oil changes. The engineer would not accept that the oil and filter had in fact been changed. All this goes back to the engine..smoking and over heating from the beginning.Apparently the fix did not fix it.Right now the truck is at the Ford dealership with the engine out of it.Monday..I guess they will have it towed back to my house..(another $400 for towing)unless I let them fix it for $5,000 dollars, and there is no way unless the money falls down from the sky!! Its a 2008 Ford F 450 Diesel 6.4 Super Duty.Dont buy Ford Products.

Ford is not going to stand behind their warranty with F450 that I have, and I dont have the $5,000 to give to them to fix it.Just wondering how on earth they can keep getting away with this.

I bought my f-450 in January, 2008. I work offshore and only have 2600 miles on it so far without any problems. I don't have the 488 rear but I'm not sure if it has the 410 or 430 rear. I believe it's the 410. The fuel milage indicator has me averaging around 10.8 to as high as 12.1 mpg depending on speed. On the highway i've averaged between 70 and 75 mph. I bought the F-450 to haul my 18,500 toyhauler (bikes included) of which my F-350 (pulled it great) but was underated for such a load. I'm offshore now and plan on towing when i get home (for the first time). So far, I haven't read to much good about the truck on this forum (which has me really concerned) regarding my investment. I have been doing the Ford recommeded engine cooldowns (three minutes in park before i shut the engine off) and using the ultra low sulfur diesel. So far i really like the truck. I know i can't really talk with only 2600 miles. Regarding the ride, on a smooth hwy, it rides O.K.. If I wanted a Cadallac, I would have bought a Cadallac. I needed a heavy hauler. I figured I wasn't going to break any milage records when I bought the truck and I did find ford evasive about that. I have taken a milage hit from what my F-350 was getting but I'm more concerned with the reliability of the vehicle. Is there anyone out there that owns one that has put some decent milage on it and actually likes the truck ???????? Seadog

Well its June 25th 2008 and my wife is out with tech's from Ford of Dalton, Georgia, with our 3 horse living quarters, about 16,000lbs and 38 feet long. We buck on acceleration and braking, we take the tow haul mode out and its fine for some weeks then returns - If we could only afford the 2009 DODGE line up we would be fine - We did get the computer reflashed at Ford of Ashville on an Endurance ride but that didn't last long, what a terrible waste of money, nice truck shame about the transmission etc. 2008 F450. Gas mileage comes with the what you've got.
