Well, as has been pointed out a few times in this discussion, this is a class 4 truck, which is the lower end of the medium-class. It's not an economy truck... it has a diesel for one reason - to pull something very heavy, and the gasoline engines don't have the torque to do it as easily. An F450 pickup with full fluids, a couple of passengers, and the usual junk we all carry in our trucks, the curb weight is approaching 10,000 pounds. There is nothing you can put under the hood that will do better than 10 mpg with that much weight before you even put a load in the bed or a trailer on the back.

While Ford does offer luxury packages on the F450, they definitely do not market the truck as a family vehicle. If it's empty most of the time, you may have purchased too much truck.

> if Ford changed the rear axle ratio to 3.73 from 4.30....it should be able to pull anything the truck is meant to pull. I have a duramax and it Pulls!! and I get 18-20 MPG around town empty and 11-12 pulling 17K.

This is just a bad truck! There is no reason why you should be able to get the F450 with a 3.73 rear axle so It can get better MPG. If I could a duramax/Alison in the F450 I get it tomorrow.

There's nothing wrong with the F450 pickup. It's just more truck than almost everyone who bought one really needs. This is a true medium-duty rig with a pickup box, not unlike some of the custom class 5 and 6 rigs out there with custom beds. Class 4 trucks are generally purchased by businesses, not consumers - they're not worried about the fuel economy; they just want the truck to earn its keep and perform daily. The F450's intent is to carry or pull something very heavy all the time, not once in a while... F450s without pickup boxes can be found everywhere as tow trucks, landscaping rigs, and such. Using the F450 to commute or grab a few things at Home Depot is like swatting a fly with a cinder block.

I’m not here to bash Ford…I own the stock and have enough in there to buy several trucks. So, I wish them the best, and I look forward to having Ford put out a truck that meets all my expectations.
But, I have to disagree with you when you say, “There is not wrong with this truck”, especially you being the host of this blog, I’m sure you have read other owners tales of disappointment.

Also, Ford knew exactly what they were doing when they launch this truck last summer. They did it at a Rodeo! And at not a landscape convention were professional people met. They also marketed this truck not only to horse people but RV’ers.

If Ford wanted this truck only to be looked at by professionals it would have introduced this truck without a pickup bed like GM does with their Kodiak trucks. And I’m also sure that the dealer sales people were not qualifying all those who purchased the trucks and warned them that this truck is a Supper Duty…run all day truck…and by the way it get’s crappy MPG.

The F450 other than the heavier chassis, has the same trans and engine has the new F250 and F350 diesel trucks have, so how is this F450 truck not meant to be used the way we all use pickup trucks? The problem is not this mystical belief that The F450 is only for professional, but the problem is the re-design that it went through. I’m having people who work on these trucks and owners of dealership who can get rid of them tell me …stay away until the problems are worked out.

BTW – here is just on other site that talks about their mechanical issues: http://www.lemonauto.com/complaints/ford/ford_f250.htm

Is your truck a 2008? What gears do you have in the rear end? You can't possibly have the 488's. I have 5 different equipment trailers and although I have yet to pull my equipment anywhere and have not gotten over 8 MPG. I have a 2002 F250 / 7.3 automatic with 3.73's and a 2001 F350 / 7.3 automatic with 4.10's as well. Both have pulled equipment trailers for five years straight. Never a breakdown. No motor problems, no transmission problems, nothing. Pulling 12000 to 16000. I am fairly confidant that either of the older trucks would pull this 450 backwards and get 12 to 18 MPG while doing it. It just doesn't feel like there's anything under the pedal, and yet it drinks more fuel than my 96 Frieghtliner 14Yd dump truck. That gets about
9 to 11 MPG loaded.

I love the truck, it rides great, handles well and looks fantastic. As long as I don't actually drive it it's the sexiest $63,000 truck out there. Although for $63,000,
I could darned near have bought another Freightliner....

How can you be getting such great milage and everyone else is not?

Dissapointed in Maine...

Update:

truck has since lost 2 more engines.ford really is trying to do the right thing and figure it out. the engineer and tech guy are blaming it on the new emissions and smog laws by the epa to smother out the diesels.
ford is taking my xlt and has put me in a brand new lariet crew cab 4x4 for the same price i paid for mine.
i will continue buying ford prouducts they realized a problem existed and fixedit

Ford decided not to honor their warranty because the truck had been abused...even though all the proper paper work was given to them of all the oil changes. The engineer would not accept that the oil and filter had in fact been changed. All this goes back to the engine..smoking and over heating from the beginning.Apparently the fix did not fix it.Right now the truck is at the Ford dealership with the engine out of it.Monday..I guess they will have it towed back to my house..(another $400 for towing)unless I let them fix it for $5,000 dollars, and there is no way unless the money falls down from the sky!! Its a 2008 Ford F 450 Diesel 6.4 Super Duty.Dont buy Ford Products.
