sir; read this fourm , then decide weather or not to buy an f-450 . I just got rid of mine due to powerloss when pulling a load up hill, also really bad on fuel (best i got while towing was 7.8) and got no help from ford .Out there in the boonies i think it would be a mistake to go with a f-450.

Dyno1, who told you you need a 4:88 gear to pull your 5th wheel? How much does that thing weight?

Had f-350 2003 dually loved truck with about 16 mpg kept blowing oil rails etc. always having problems, received new truck because 2003 was in shop 3 out of 8 months I had to pay for offset about $3000 but received f250 with same engine but all problems solved now down to 13.8 mpg with out dually? what happened? still blew oil rail but fixed and ran through warranty but started bucking so traded for new truck.
I haul trailers for Boy Scouts and haul bob cats and back hoes on sometimes twisted and hilly roads, dually was great but I was not comfortable with single rear end so went back to dually that I love, I was told (because there is no where to find actual miles or mileage under similar conditions) by the sales man that this new engine on the f450 along with two COUNT EM TWO turbo's should out do and be comparable to my old f350. Please no smart snobby answers as I still drive my 2000 f550, 7.3 dump truck and still get usually over 17 mpg. I get about 9 mpg in my f450 without load just tool box and about 400 lbs inside I believe that it is up to Ford to put this kind of info into writing and for consumers not to have to trust unscrupulous sales personnel, this should be on sticker.

Well after a 4+ month in waiting,Ford after 4 fuel pumps injectors relays, finally told me to get a new ford. They did'nt give me my money back,so I am getting a 650 with a cat engine,The truck I'm getting was 4 sale for 45,500 my cost for f450 was 55,600 and ford said no to money back. But i have to take deal or go bankrupt, Never again will Ford every get a good word said about them. The customer service rude, and could care less.engineers wont listen, service [same thing] ripping people off,4 month's straight this truck was in for service [they had it].except for 2 weeks because engineers were on vacation and truck could not be looked at during holiday. You can bet ford has not heard the end of me. Ford has tryed more ways to get out of paying for anything to do with this truck.

Wow, I also agree this is one beautiful truck in every way except....

I was in hopes that mine just wasn't broken in.....

I have never seen such poor miliage.

I'm in Canada, At 120 Klm on our big highways I'm getting 8 MPH Truck un loaded.

If I drive slower like 60 MPH I get a woping big 10 MPG !

I think it's time Ford did something about this !

Well, as has been pointed out a few times in this discussion, this is a class 4 truck, which is the lower end of the medium-class. It's not an economy truck... it has a diesel for one reason - to pull something very heavy, and the gasoline engines don't have the torque to do it as easily. An F450 pickup with full fluids, a couple of passengers, and the usual junk we all carry in our trucks, the curb weight is approaching 10,000 pounds. There is nothing you can put under the hood that will do better than 10 mpg with that much weight before you even put a load in the bed or a trailer on the back.

While Ford does offer luxury packages on the F450, they definitely do not market the truck as a family vehicle. If it's empty most of the time, you may have purchased too much truck.

> if Ford changed the rear axle ratio to 3.73 from 4.30....it should be able to pull anything the truck is meant to pull. I have a duramax and it Pulls!! and I get 18-20 MPG around town empty and 11-12 pulling 17K.

This is just a bad truck! There is no reason why you should be able to get the F450 with a 3.73 rear axle so It can get better MPG. If I could a duramax/Alison in the F450 I get it tomorrow.
