I have a F450 and tow a 16,000 5th wheel living quarter 4 horse trailer. So fare I have had nothing but trouble with mine. At about 30 to 40 mph it starts to buck, in order to get it stopped I have to slam my foot to the floor or brake. I have the 4.10 rear end they told me to order for better mileage(mileage is not over 7). I ran it in tow haul like they told me to do at dealers. I have talked to people who have gotten rid of there 2005 to 2007 F350 because of the bucking issues. I was told by a friend the way to get around this is to not us tow haul unless going down hill for the compression. So I'm driving it out of tow haul and that seems to work. Pulling the hills out of tow haul it sounds like it is going to blowup but no bucking, although it still does this when in tow haul coming down a steep hill. My point, this is a new truck I bought to haul with and I will probably have to blow it up before Ford will do anything about it. I have already done what they said would fix it and its the same. My other complaint is the mileage 5 to 7 hauling is not good mileage. I like the looks of the F450 and the way it turns, but everything else sucks. I have a Ford rep coming out to drive it, because I want them to take it back.
If any one out there is having the bucking problem I would like to hear from you.

Although I appreciate the point you are making about it being a commercial vehicle I have talked to a number of truckers that say that they get 12 to 15 mpg out of their semis so there is no reason that I get 6 MPG!!!! Out of my 450 with a 4.3 ratio. I tow a 3 car hauler and now understand why everybody else uses a dodge…when its time for a second truck I would look much deeper into the competition before signing up for a 6mpg diesel truck.

Try keeping the RPMs under 2,000.

How about Ford fixing the guy's problem and truck. I'm sure Ford would love to market their truck in a positive light. Right now the F450 is just good for driving around town and going to the supermarket. If Ford keeps this up...they're not going to have anything to worry about...because they will be out of the class 3 and 4 truck business. 2008 Ford trucks are a mess. I would love nothing more than to buy the F450 but not when my current truck out tows the F450 and get's 9-12 MPG (55-70 mile per hour) across Ohio and Penn on Route 80, pulling a 16K 5th wheel.
Does anybody know why Ford can't or will not put a 3.73 ratio on the rear axle?

Recently got an '08 F450 with 4.88 rear end and it also is bucking/surging just as my '05 F350 did pulling a 15,500lb gooseneck living quarter 3 horse trailer. Only difference is that the '08 bucks/surges anywhere between ~20 to 50 MPH. -The '05 F350 had the problem between ~45 to 60 MPH.

Hi: My wife and I are about to buy a slide on and we are having a hard time with the right vehicle to haul it with. I have always heard Dodge with the cummings was the best. I dont want the new Ford 350/450 because all I read about is TROUBLE with the engine. I dont know that much about the Duramax. The camper we will be placing in the truck bed is about 5200lbs when everything is said and done. My question is; will a 3500 be enough truock for us? We plan to go out for about 2-3 months at a time, come home for about 2 months and go out again for 2-3 months and continue that cycle. Any help would be appreaciated. Thanks Bob M

Yes, the 3500/1 ton is fine. The rear axle rating on a Duramax is over 8,000 lb. and you will get excellent MPG too!

I hear what you are saying about the 8000lb axel weight but what about the MGVW with a camper that is 5200 to 5300 lbs?

WE BOUGHT THE 450 DUALLY DIESEL, EXCELLENT TRUCK! WE DROVE FROM MINN.TO ALASKA, STOPPED IN OREGON AND PUT A 3 SLIDE HOST CAMPER SLIDE-IN (APPROX 5000 LBS FULL). MILEAGE WITH CAMPER WAS 10-11 MPG. LOTS OF MOUNTAIN DRIVING. THIS BABY CAN GO 80 MPH WITH 5.000 LB. IN THE BOX. SO FAR, WITHOUT THE CAMPER ON THE TRUCK WITH 6000 MILES ON THE TRUCK, I'M GETTING 12.5 NOW. THIS IS SOME MIX CITY AND HIGHWAY DRIVING. I'M STILL HAPPY WITH THIS TANK BECAUSE WITH A BIG CAMPER YOU DEFINITELY NEED DUALS! THE DIESEL JUST MAKES IT THAT MUCH MORE POWERFUL AND THIS NEW DIESEL DOESN'T MAKE JOHN DEERE TRACTOR NOISE LIKE THE DODGE. HOPE THIS HELPS.
