Can someone give me input on my new 2009 F-450 King Ranch. At this time, it is performing at about 10 miles per gallon at pure highway driving and 8.5 when exclusively city driving all NOT TOWING. At the same time, the exhaust is very black and has lots of carbon inside. Otherwise, the truck is great. I hauled a 17,000 # 5th Wheel from Dallas to Estes Park, Colorado at 70 mph and got 6.8 mpg going uphill north and 7.1 mpg at 70 mph going downhill south. Any thoughts regarding Exhaust Cleaning issue and how to get better everyday driving milage ?????? Thank you for help. Love It & Hate It !!!!!!

Black, Loaded, looks sexy just sitting still...But you better have deep pockets son, cause it ain't gettin any better. I have been getting on average 8.5 MPG since it was new. Empty or pulling 20K, doesn't seem to matter. I recently went on a 200 mile highway trip and with cetane booster got about 10.5.MPG. If you add in the cost of the booster, it was a wash. Mine has about 35,000 miles on it now, and although it is running well, the computer is sending the DPF into Regen about every 40 to 60 miles. This means to me that the DPF is damn near plugged up already. I'm taking it in next week to have them check it out and twist their arm to replace it. It should not be plugged already. On it's face, it is a stupid system. There is no way in hell that a diesel engine will perform correctly long term, with the exhaust system being that sensitive. Diesel engines need to breathe big time and this is the 6.4's achillies heel. If you could get rid of the stupid DPF system and recalibrate the computer so the engine would run without it, the truck would probably produce another 200 HP, and run flawlessly for hundreds of thousands of miles. But thanks to the bark eating, whale saving, granola crunching, tree hugging, Reid, Pelosi, Boxer, Etc California style mentality that is overtaking the world, this is what we are stuck with. ( If we don't start Voting Conservative and get these assholes out of there, we are all going to be driving Electric trucks !) My truck has 488 gears which is a large part of the problem with the MPG. There is a company in Las Vegas that Makes an Overdrive kit for these trucks which they say will drop your RPMs by about 800 -1000 on the highway. My guess is that should result in a 3 - 5 MPG increase. The OD kit is about $3,000. I haven't bought it yet, but I probably will. Good luck |
