I wanted to trade my Lexus for a 03-06 Carrera but my wife wants to keep the Lexus for her to use since it's already paid-off. She wants me to trade her 04 Pilot instead but I can't buy a Carrera bec we can't have 2 cars. We have kids & need an SUV.

Need sporty SUV & these 2 are my choice. Test drove both which are priced the same.

Cayenne is a bit faster, handles a bit better, feels more solid & has a better interior.

BMW's exterior looks better, interior is roomier & is more family friendly.

Need to decide quick. What do you folks think ?

I bought an X5 last December because I didn't want to wait until this spring for the re-designed Cayenne. You probably won't go wrong with either vehicle. But if you place a premium on driving an SUV that "feels" like a sports car, the Cayenne might be a better choice. The new X5's design has focused on smooth, quiet, composed ride (especially with the sport package's suspension). It handles great and the steering is very quick, but it doesn't "feel" as sporty or as mean or as gritty as the old X5. That's exactly what I was looking for, but if the requirement is more of a pure sport driving experience, the Cayenne would be a great choice.

The other reason that I did not choose the Cayenne is that seat comfort is really important to me. The seats in the Cayenne do not stack up well against the X5's upgraded contour seat package.

My sister has an 06 ML350 w/ the AMG package. It's a nice SUV but I didn't buy it because I want a dark gray color & MB doesn't have that color on the ML. X5 has a Space gray & Cayenne has a Meteor Gray.

The GL is too big. I'd prefer the GX 470 over the GL.

If I wanna be selfish it'd be the Cayenne hands down, but I agree w/ anon3. The seats specially in the rear aren't comfy. The backrest on the rear is too stiff, couldn't recline it. I didn't notice if the X5's rear seats recline.

Based on the older versions. What are the reliability ratings on these 2 ?

Interestingly enough, I was with my friend who test-drove both of these and pronounced a Bimmer to be a winner, due to Cayenne being a turtle when compared to the Bimmer. And this was provided that we both liked Cayenne looks-wise better, however, the lack of performance killed it. Note that this applies for 6-cylinder engines on both, i.e., for the low-end of these cars, with the price starting at about $45K.

skobola,

Are you sure that you tested the 2 updated versions ? The 08 Cayenne has 290 hp w/ around 273 lb ft of torque vs. the X5 that has 260+ hp & 225 lb.ft. of torque. There is a noticeable diff specially on the low end & it's in favor of the Porsche.

The lowest price on a brand new X5 & Cayenne is no less than $50k. The base car (auto trans) itself with out any options is on the $46-47k range. Both are hardly discounting these cars bec. they're fairly new. Specially the Cayenne that just came out in March.. A couple of dealers here are discounting some of their X5's by $2k. There's not a dealer in the nation that's selling a Cayenne below $50k, unless it's manual..

I almost pulled the trigger on the X5 earlier but the dealer close by don't have the Space Gray w/ the 3rd row seat. There's a dealer that's 1 hr away that has 3 space gray's priced at $52k+.

I'm almost sold w/ the X5 unless the Porsche dealer I'm dealing w/ gives me a price that's lower than $52k.

The specs on the paper certainly favored the Cayenne, but my friend's opinion was that the Bimmer was more agile. I know by sitting in the rear seat in both of them that Cayenne certainly made more noise and felt like really trying to be peppy, while Bimmer was much quieter and thus made me believe what was my friend saying, that is, that it was more agile and peppy without as much trying as the Cayenne. And as I said, the verdict to go for the Bimmer was even provided that both of us liked the Cayenne better in regard of the exterior and interior looks.
I have to admit that we both already have had Bimmer sedans, so maybe we were going for the SUV, oops, SAV of the same brand automatically. As I said, I was certainly enjoying more the Bimmer as a passenger, and it felt more peppy to me... But I have not test driven neither, as I would never go for a SUV... Which means that you can take my evaluation only as an additional view of the opposite kind!
If I would be you, I would choose exactly the same route, and drive both of these in a same manner, and then if you will like one over the other, I guess, that would be it...

Thanks for your input. I test drove these SUV's twice already. The Cayenne is a bit noisier bec I think it's plainly a Porsche. I did the 2nd look & drive of both on Saturday. As soon as you turn on the ignition of the Cayenne you already hear that exhaust note typical of a Porsche even at idle while the Bimmer is quiet. You accelerate & the Bimmer is still quiet, while the POrsche has that sweet tone typical of it's brand. I'm leaning towards the X5 bec. of things like the rear seats backrest recline & the Cayenne is fixed & too straight. That's important for me bec. kids tend to sleep on long drives & the Cayenne will be so uncomfortable. The handling & the fun to drive though is Porsche all the way. The Bimmers suspension is tight but kinda numb compared to the Cayenne.

The only thing delaying me now is the BMW dealer here don't have the color that I want, there's none in their pipeline so I need to order it. The BMW dealer an hour away have 3 Grays but problem is if I buy it there the BMW dealership here won't give me a loaner if I take it there for a repair or for maintenance. Why can't all lux marques be like Lexus ??

Other thing is the reliability of these 2 SUV's. Which will be more reliable. JD Powers rate Porsche higher than BMW. I don't know. I may end up with whoever gives me a bigger discount since they're equally great.

The BMW dealers make me sick with they little petty things that they do to stick it to us. I believe that BMW NA should regulate that, however, they are pretty in line with the dealers' behavior... but that would be another topic altogether! I certainly did not have the same criteria as you (back seat), and for me BMW won as a better SUV, regardless of me actually liking the looks of Porsche better. Actually, the bad on the Porsche's end was that I heard that its reliability and evaluations are among worst of all luxury SUVs. Yet, that would not prevent me to go for it because the dealership in which would I buy it offers a lot of incentives servicing-wise and loaners if I would buy it over there.
Please, do not get guided by the discounts - it is important that you get a SUV that you like! In other words, a better discount will not make it a better SUV, especially if you would rather have the other one, I think.
