Article comments for Full Test: 2007 Porsche 911 GT3 - Let's cut right to the chase. The 2007 Porsche 911 GT3 is our favorite Porsche. It's as if everything that Porsche has ever known about fast cars has been stuffed into this 911. (more)

Follow-Up Test: 2007 Porsche 911 GT3 RS - In fact, the RS is really not so different from a standard-issue GT3. This is largely because the U.S.-bound RS model must do without the European model's bolt-in roll cage, plastic rear window, single-piece carbon-fiber seats and five-point seatbelt harness. (more)

If I dind't want/need a backseat to accomodate my daughters, I think I would give up the suntanning factor of my 911S Cab for the driving experience of the GT3. Of course, I'd also have to budget at least the 2 day Porsche Performance Driving School into the cost.

P.S. Host: you might want to re-check the curb weight quoted in the article. I'm almost sure the GT3 is around 3,075 lbs, not the 3,283 lbs. quoted. The Edmunds weight is practically as much as my 911S Cab (with a back seat). If the quote includes the driver, tell your bosses to stop doing that. Makes for inconsistent comparisons that vary with the girth of the driver.

Actually, we weigh all of our test cars. Even though Porsche's claimed weight is 3,075 lbs, the GT3 we tested weighed 3,238 pounds. (83 was a transposed figure.) Our weighing procedure for as-tested curb weight follows standard SAE practice: a full tank of fuel and other fluids, but no occupants or luggage on board. And we double-checked it.

What manufacturers typically publish is a base (no option) curb weight. Because press vehicles are usually loaded with every available toy, its not unusual for us to discover anything from a 50 to an 800 pound difference. (Who knew the dual-rear wheels and the crew-cab on crew-cab duallie don't figure in the manufacturer's curb weight - they're both options!)

But I can't say exactly why this GT3's weight was so different. None of its options were particularly heavy, and the PCCB brakes are lighter. Perhaps some of the standard features on the US version (A/C, sunroof) are options in Germany. After all, the source of the 3,075 lb figure was a conversion from an "Unladen, DIN" weight of 1395 kg provided by Germany.

Whatever the cause, it's quite likely that your 911S cab (along with most cars out there) also outweighs its published curb weight.

Well a 16.4 gallon full tank of fuel is 130+ lbs, so that by itself would account for most of the difference. Are you saying you weigh with a full tank but Porsche's curb weight is empty?

No, I'm not. I don't know how Porsche came up with the GT3 curb weight or how the particular car used to come up with the certification figure was equipped.

Racecar weight specs and rules assume no fuel, as the car isn't measured until the end of the race when the tank is about empty (or should be if the crew timed it right). If the dry weight had been published, the numbers would work out per your example.

But the GT3 isn't the RSR racecar, and Porsche's GT3 press clearly materials state "Unladen, DIN" weight (approximately the same as SAE curb, but with 90% fuel instead of full). I don't see the answer there.

I do know that the mass figures came out of Germany. Overseas manufacturers don't always produce a unique US-model curb weight. So if the US model has more equipment than its home-market counterpart, the use of a one-size-fits-all curb weight derived from the home-market version increases the chance of a discrepancy.

GT2 is a higher torque Turbo, with rear wheel drive (a Turbo has 4 wheel drive). GT3 is basically a higher horse power (higher rpm) Carrera S. At least, this is my simplistic view of how I judge them.
