Mazda has taken a hit in surveys while introducing many new models (almost the whole lineup)
Curious. Mazda has quite a few hits recently. The Mazdaspeed3 seems to be a huge success. The press on the Mazda5 also seemed positive. Did I miss something about the CX7 or CX9 which I thought were well received?

I don't have the exact stats, but from another site, I read that Ford is the majority shareholder of Mazda. Therefore, without getting into semantics, Ford owns Mazda.
Being the majority shareholder does not always mean you own the company. Ford cannot sell Mazda like the way Daimler-Benz is about to sell Chrysler; at most Ford can sell their 33 percent stake.

Maybe, but in the case of Ford and Mazda, Ford is calling all the shots so that makes me feel that Mazda is taking on Ford's management style and abandonding the Japanese way. Just my thinking....

Our 1991 MX-6 GT gave us alot of miles of happy memories. It was a great car. We did have to replace the air conditioner and the power window motor but otherwise it was problem-free. It was red but faded in it's old age. we are planning on getting another Mazda before the end of this year-Mazda-speed 3 or 6. Now to decide which one.

What proof do you have that Ford calls all the shots?

Very true. Ford owns controlling interest, not the company.
Ford would not be wise to sell Mazda right now, Ford is making profitable returns on their 33.4%.

you bring up some good points...but as somebody who deals with both companies on a daily basis I can say without a doubt, Ford calls the shots. They also make the top personnel decisions.

Well, your personal experience certainly trumps what I can observe from the outside. If it's the case that Ford calls all the shots, then Ford has been kind to Mazda (and to Volvo). They have allowed Mazda to retain their own brand image. As a result, Mazda is doing fairly well especially overseas. This is in contrast to what GM did to Saab.

I meant they have taken a hit in reliability surveys, although I haven't done a thorough review of that. And, of course, reliability surveys can be difficult to digest and dissect. That's just my general impression.. mostly from CR and JD powers. Overall, Mazdas seem to be fairly reliable but they don't look so hot in JD powers survey and in several models in CR.
In the press, their cars have been recieved with glowing reviews. Well, except in Europe.
